Best Moka Pots
This is the Verdict: Which Mokapot Is Right for You?
The original Bialetti Moka Express is our favorite stovetop espresso machine. The large variety of cup sizes makes it suitable for anyone. It’s inexpensive, reliable, and lasts a long time. It’s great that you reached this point in the buying guide. I hope you found this helpful in helping to decide on the best stovetop coffee maker for you. You are curious as to what the differences between French Presses and Moka Pots?
In my own kitchen in St. Louis, I conducted a taste test with four 6-cup moka pots: my Bialetti Moka Express Alessi Moka Grosche Milano Red , and the stainless steel Ilsa Turbo Express . IKEA offers a variety of options, from their Scandinavian twist on the traditional moka pot to its Mo. The cute and colourful Cocca Moka by MA Design Store is one of many options. Amazon has many other knockoffs, but the models that we selected were the most representative.
For my taste testing, 16 coffee pots were made over the course of a week. To make cafe con leche, each pot had a moka and was filled with Cafe Bustelo piloncillo. This is a compact cone of brown sweetness. I used whole milk. The Intelligentsia black cat classic espresso Intelligentsia House blended coffee beans and Starbucks House blend coffee beans were used in the final brew. I also timed how long each pot took to brew 20 grams of grounds from start to finish. To compare the results blindly, my boyfriend poured about an ounce from each mokapot into each cup.
I am by no means a coffee expert (as I said, I just started drinking it regularly in the past year), but I did find some obvious differences between the pots’ brews. Bialetti Moka Express was the clear winner, producing the smoothest, most flavorful, full-bodied flavors. It is chocolatey and smoky with just a touch of acidity. Alessi Moka’s brews had a slightly higher acidity and were less rich but were virtually identical to the Bialetti’s. It was possible to drink the Ilsa Turbo Express made of stainless steel, although they were slightly hollowed and flat. Grosche Milano Blue brewed brews that were too watery or flavorless were also acceptable.
My Bialetti pot has served me well for so many years. Although my boyfriend and myself have seen it go through some major wear, I still believe that the Bialetti pot is invincible. Other than a hairline crack on the hinge (which is a stress point if you try to screw the top on one-handed, as I have), it hasn’t sustained any major damage. Cast-aluminum parts fit together easily and are easy to clean. When the pot is not in use, it fits into my mid-century modern decor as a piece of functional art.
Aluminum Vs. Stainless Steel
Although moka pots were traditionally made of aluminum, many modern models can be made out of stainless steel. Each material offers its advantages and disadvantages.
Aluminum is an inexpensive material that conducts heat effectively and can be used to make coffee. Moka pots made of aluminum are great for camping because of their lightweight. They must be washed by hand and completely dried to avoid rusting. Soap is not recommended by most manufacturers to preserve aluminum’s flavor.
Aluminum is less expensive than stainless steel, but it’s also stronger. Because stainless steel is nonporous, they don’t rust nor corrode. Aesthetically, these moka pots maintain their patina for longer and look more at home in modern kitchens. While they are dishwasher-safe, it is better to wash them by hand to extend their longevity.
