Cobra Speedzone Xtreme Driver Review

Looks And Tech

The RADSPEED driver line is offered stock in an eye-popping “Turbo Yellow” (more of a neon green in my opinion) and Black, or “Peacoat” and Red, depending on which model you’re interested in.

This is a combination of deep blue, red, and white for those who didn’t go to art school. It’s very American and minorly British with a touch of Aussie. It’s one of my favourite color combinations, I must say.

>> Check the price for “Blue Peacoat”, version

Cobra has even partnered with Volition America to produce a proper Stars and Stripes edition where a portion of the proceeds are sold to support the families of military heroes through the Folds of Honor Foundation. We are proud to support a worthy cause.

Each RADSPEED driver is equipped with a Thin-Ply Carbon Wrap Crown at address. This reduces the weight of each vehicle and allows Cobra 6g to be redistributed in a discretionary manner. The RAD is a matte carbon fiber with a crowned C alignment aid. The XB, XD and XB are made of glossy carbon fiber.

The top of this head is all business except for four visible ribs running through the crown that further assist with framing the ball. Traditionalists will notice that the XB and XD drivers have a bit more of a triangular appearance than competitors, which should inspire extra confidence behind the ball.

The RADSPEED line features a T-Bar Speed Chassis, which further aids in weight loss of up to 7g.

For those of you that tee the ball a little further back in your stance, the iconic CNC milled Infinity Face is visible with its sun-burst-like pattern and a big infinity etching right in the sweet spot.

Despite the subdued business front, the latest renditions of Cobra’s drivers are all “party in the back” with bold neon badging and an adjustable weight system to further tailor ball flight characteristics.

The looks of the RADSPEED line are aggressive, flashy, and scream “futuristic”. One of my playing buddies has affectionately nicknamed his RAD “Bumblebee” after the famous Transformer.

It’s obvious that there’s a theme developing here – RADSPEED is all about radical design, radial weighting, and ball speed.

Cobra created a driver that is fast, powerful and strikes hard. They reduced the weight of the crown by placing it strategically and adjusting its position.

Drivers will be tested by players who notice there is no track or radial weight around the driver’s rim to alter the flight path of the XB/RAD. Instead, Cobra keeps it simple by focusing on spin and flight path while keeping as much weight as possible behind impact: set it and forget it.

Cobra King Speedzone Drivers On The Course

The course was so challenging that I felt I could have draped a blanket around all three drivers. This is especially true when considering the difference in price between the TaylorMade SIM Max and the TaylorMade SIM Max. These are all quality golf clubs that I have a lot of confidence with. It was such a nice feeling to be able to see consistent ball flight and distance out on the course.

It is worth noting that the TaylorMade SIM Max felt more agile in the wind than it did to my naked eyes. I gained 4-5 yards due to this.

I felt very comfortable with all the drivers I took out during this test, but if I had to decide, the Xtreme had an even more consistent flight and shape. I found it to be very neutral in height and shape, which was great for my game.

  • The Cobra King Speedzone driver features front and rear adjustability that supports D1 to D4 swing weights. However, there is no adjustability option in the Cobra F9 driver that has a standard swing weight of D3.

What Is Speedzone Technology?

The Cobra Speedzone is marketed as the company’s fastest driver ever. So, what technology did they develop in order to achieve this? The name Speedzone takes its inspiration from Formula 1 race cars. The focus here is on optimizing 6 different “zones of speed” as Cobra calls them. Below is a brief overview of each zone.

  • Titanium speed chassis – T-bar chassis reduced amount of Titanium to create a stronger frame and improve stability
  • Speedback weighting – Lower CG for a more efficient energy transfer to produce high launch with low spin
  • Speedback aero shape – to improve acceleration power

Cobra King Speedzone Driver

The best option for low-handicappers

KEY FEATURES

  • Ideal for low handicappers wanting more driving control
  • Players can shape shots with traditional head sizes
  • You can adjust the shot’s height with two adjustable weights
  • For better control and more workability, performance golf clubs increase MOI
  • Low spin off the tee for higher accuracy and more fairways hit

The Cobra King Speedzone Driver offers dynamic shotmaking ability for low handicappers looking to upgrade their clubhead speeds and accuracy. Players can adjust the height and radius of their drives by using two weights that are interchangable along the sole.

Cobra, along with Speed Chassis which fuels these Speedzone Drivers’ fast natures, has concentrated their energy on six zones along the clubhead in order to minimize drag and increase velocity.

The CNC milled sweet spot reduces sidespin, and makes it very forgiving and wonderfully straight with plenty of workability for crafty players.

Out of the two loft options for the Speedzone Driver, the 9-degree option provides low flight, while the 10.5-degree provides mid-range shot height on each drive. Speedzone drivers can be fast. This standard Speedzone model does not disappoint. It generates speeds comparable to the F9 Speedback model.

Speedzone drivers are able to choose from a variety of shaft options, including those made by highly reputable companies like Aldila and HZRDUS.

The Cobra King Speedzone Driver is designed for experienced players but weekend warriors who are ready to take the next step will appreciate its accessibility, reliability and phenomenal performance.

Cobra King Speedzone Drivers Verdict

I enjoyed hitting both Speedzone models but in the end favoured the Xtreme due to its forgiveness and stability through the strike. It was a great indoor and outdoor model. It is difficult to distinguish the performance of these two numbers, however.

I may look to use the Cobra Speedzone if I played in windy conditions so I could change the weights and lofts around a little more to my preference on the day. Based on what I experienced, the Xtreme won. The model that suits your game, golf course and playing conditions will be up to you.

Another great thing that Cobra have added to the Speedzone family of clubs is Arccos embedded grip sensors. They pair with the Arccos Caddie app that golfers can download to their mobile device. The app allows golfers to analyze a lot of data, which Arccos claims will allow them to make better shot-making decisions.

There was very little between these drivers, they performed very highly in terms of spin, carry and dispersion.

This review was started with the idea that Leicester City is the “Golfing City right now”. And look at what The Foxes did in 2016. They outperformed every team, and even won the Premier League. It just shows that more performance doesn’t necessarily mean cheaper.

Are The Speedzone Speedzone Xtreme Drivers Better than The Cobra King Speedzone?

The majority of golfers believe that the Cobra King Speedzone driver is a superior driver than the Speedzone Xtreme. For example, the carry distance offered by the Speedzone driver is more than the Speedzone Xtreme driver by a few yards and it has a better stability.

The Cobra Speedzone driver also helps low handicap golfers to improve their game. This is a great choice for people who like low or mid launch.

The Cobra King Speedzone is a great driver for low and middle handicappers.

The sound is another area in which the Cobra King Speedzone excels over the Cobra King Speedzone Extreme. Players find the sound rendered by the Cobra King Speedzone to be more pleasing to the ears when compared with the Cobra King Speedzone Xtreme.

Aerodynamic Shape

It all starts with the shape, which reduces drag, lowers the center of gravity and helps to produce a very wide and forgiving sweet spot. The Speezone drivers head greatly reduces drag on your downswing to that you can generate faster club speed without adjusting your mechanics. You get a much longer and straighter drive with better contact on the ball.

The 460cc head approaches legal limits for COR value, which generally relates to how much energy the driver transfers to the ball. An aerodynamic head shape greatly reduces drag, which increases your natural swing speed. The improved COR value and faster swing speed translates into faster ball speed and longer drives.

Cobra Speedzone Xtreme Driver Review

Speedback Weighting Lowers Center Of Gravity

One of the coolest features is the speed back weighting system that places 69 grams of weight as low as it can go in the sole and helps to spread its impact across nearly the entire face. The low center of gravity and widened effect that greatly reduces the potential for bad hits. The speed back weighting also greatly improved the COR value to deliver truly astounding drives.

The speed back weighting system virtually eliminates the heel and toe. They still are there, but bad hits will not put as much draw or fade on the ball as you might with your current driver. When mated to the Infinity Face, you get exceptional ball and spin control that helps to straighten out your drives and counteract the natural fade that most golfers place on their drives.

The Cobra’s View

“Our new King Speedzone drivers emphatically answered the question we are always asked – can you really improve the driver any further and stay within the rules of golf? The answer to that question is yes.

We approached design in the same manner as if we were creating the fastest car on earth. This ensured that speed considerations weren’t overlooked. With our six zones of performance, Speedzone is the fastest driver that we have ever produced.”

Tom Olsavsky, VP of R&D for Cobra Golf

Golfalot also met Tom during the 2020 PGA Show in order to learn more about how Speedzone drivers are designed.

Taylormade Sim Max

Best Distance Option

KEY FEATURES

  • Aerodynamic head shape increases swing speeds with lower CG
  • High MOI for exceptional stability that stops twisting at impact
  • Twist Face Technology reduces spin to ensure straighter drives

The SIM MAX also boasts several helpful features such as the Twist Face Technology that significantly reduces the side spin that causes slices, a Thru-Slot Speed Pocket that adds yards to your drive, and Speed-Injected Face for jaw-dropping velocity through the impact zone.

The SIM MAX has slightly greater yardage and a better response than the Cobra Speedzone. That said, each golf club offers forgiveness along with its muscle, along with dynamic consistency that players love to experience.

Sound And Feel

All drivers in the RADSPEED series share a similar sound, with the RAD slightly “deeper” on impact and solider. The sound difference between them is not noticeable unless you really pay attention.

Feel wise, the RAD distinguishes itself from its siblings as the most solid or compact of the set. Here, the extra 28g pushed to the front of this model is noticeable and gives the player gravitas when striking the ball. It’s a great hammer to the tee.

The RAD may be one of my most densely feeling drivers, but it can also hurt players who use feel to fine-tune their shots.

I hit the ball consistently higher than my club’s face, as I mentioned previously. This was confirmed by impact tape. While the club performed admirably, it would have been harder to figure out just how high up I was hitting without ball marks.

One last note about this driver: despite its high tungsten content, it is very lightweight with a D1.5 swingweight for the shaft that I used (HZRDUS Red).

Cobra Speedzone Xtreme Driver Review

Is it worth the upgrade?

SpeedZone’s SpeedZone line is redesigned to include the RADSPEED driver series. With a stable and solid platform, the big stick is more enjoyable than its predecessor.

Split wing-weights placed towards the front of the club offer more comfort for off-center hits and indicate that the ball is heading in the right direction.

While the SpeedZone line was monumental in the ball flights they could produce, the RADSPEED driver line does more of the same with improved consistency.

These drivers are not for me as I don’t know what they’re going to do, but it is worth a look for players who have had the previous edition.

Global Golf offers a Utry Trial Program that allows you to test it for several weeks before making a decision.

Taylormade Sim 2

The SIM2 is TaylorMade’s highest skill-advanced driver and has the lowest spin rate in the SIM2 family. It’s a driver that is very similar to the RAD. You can read our review of the TaylorMade SIM 2 here.

Is It Forgiving?

The Cobra Speedzone has a 460CC head and a milled face that wraps seamlessly into the crown and sole.

In terms of precision, this makes the driver moderately forgiving. Our testers found the Cobra Speedzone driver easy to use and were able find their sweet spot quickly.

Distance help can be minimal. The lighter head and faster swing speeds are the main factors in reducing distance.

Which Clubs Options Are There?

The SpeedZone comes with a huge array of shaft options from four different manufacturers. There are many options.

Although the RadSpeed offers a smaller selection of shafts, it’s still very impressive. It is amazing to have the Fujikura Motore!

Customization Options For Cobra King Speedzone Driver

People who offer more forgiveness can often lose their ability to customize. This isn’t the case with the Cobra King Speedzone. It’s available for both left and right handed golfers, with a 9 or 10.5 degree loft. There are four shaft flex options (Lite, Regular, Stiff, Extra Stiff) and five shaft options including:

  • Aldila Rogue Silver 60

Callaway Big Bertha B21

In my opinion the Big Bertha B21 is the best driver that Callaway offer. This driver has all the technology that Callaways premium drivers offer, but it is much more stylish.

It is an amazing club. At $459 it is also great value. The RadSpeed feels better to hit and is more forgiving though.

The B21 gets 91/100 from me, I think it’s a better club than the Epic but due to feel and performance the Cobra wins.

The Big Bertha’s minimalistic design is my favorite, but I like the Cobra’s more striking and easy-to-hit look.

Performance

For as long as my memory can recall, I played an 10.5 degree driver. However, I found the initial results of using the 9 degree driver to be mediocre. Adding loft with the MyFly hosel adjustment system was super simple and intuitive, and I immediately achieved a launch angle that better fit my swing. Although I’ve never used a Mitsubishi Tensei CK AV Blue shaft before, it has become a favorite of mine. Cobra is truly a premium choice for golfers when it comes to shaft options.

Jay Marino at Club Champion was my master club fitter and reviewed all of my launch monitor data. Two performance factors stood out to me – forgiveness and power. If you dig deeper, it is clear that these two factors have a direct correlation in terms of effectiveness and consistency. Smash factor was amazingly consistent and high, even with significant off-center strikes.

Cobra breaks their performance into six areas: power, strength and light, as well as aero, aero, stability. They use analogies from race cars but ultimately it comes down to the construction. Titanium for a strong chassis, 360 Carbon Wrap for weight savings, and weight positioning for a low center of gravity. Mix in optimized aerodynamics and the infinity face, and the KING SPEEDZONE XTREME driver is a reliable workhorse.

Price: $449 / BUY NOW Lofts: 9 , 10.5 , 12 Our take: The 458cc Xtreme is slightly longer front to back than the standard model, and features but one adjustable weight, giving it more forgiveness for the golfer looking for pure speed and not as much workability.

Robot’s take: Like the standard model, forgives toe shots like crazy.

Cnc-Milled Infinity Face

The driver can improve swing speed and ball speeds by having a more aerodynamic design, but you need to have a hard surface that is very easy to work with. The Cobra King Speedzone Xtreme Driver review of its clubface shows a CNC-milled face gives you an exceptionally wide and forgiving sweet spot.

Infinity Face is a great way to reduce the impact of putting too much toe or heel on your ball. Although the head is oversized, the Infinity titanium face transforms it into an effective hitting surface.

The driver adds distance to even a low-handicapper’s already long drives with improved technology that gives the clubhead a larger sweet spot and greater control over ball spin. With its 460cc head, aerodynamic design, and high swing speeds, the driver is your best choice. The clubface is great at controlling misshits, so you can push the ball further off the fairway.

cobra speedzone xtreme driver review

Why would I want to buy a Cobra Speedzone Xtreme?

King Speedzone Xtreme is a thorough review of the inner workings. It shows that it’s a highly-tech driver, which maximizes COR and forgiving.

If you want to have a driver with more spin or roll on fairways, then adjust the mass. It is possible to adjust the mass for ball spin reduction, clubface forgiveness or maximum distance.

Although the Speedzone offers the lowest loft, a 9-degree loft would be ideal for lower-handicappers. It is possible to get a fairly low, flat trajectory which gives your ball a greater distance off the tee. A flatter trajectory helps you deal with windy conditions. The ball won’t hang in the winds and travel where it is not wanted to. The loft can be adjusted to reach a maximum of 12.5 degrees and adjust again to get the right draw/fade bias for you swing.

Possibly the best part about the Cobra Speedzone Xtreme is the price. This driver is significantly cheaper than similar-quality drivers from other manufacturers. This cool driver is able to produce straighter drivers and longer distances than other brands.

Cobra Golf King Speedzone Pilot – First Impressions Review

The COBRA Golf KING SPEEDZONE was one of the many drivers that I looked forward to swinging in 2020. The first time I saw one was in October at a Kitchener industry fair. It was a driver that I had seen in person. I was skeptical if it would live up to my expectations.

That was a question that I would have answered at the 2020 PGA Show in Orlando, Florida. Here is my review of the COBRA Golf KING SPEEDZONE driver based on the first impressions that it gave me at Demo Day at Orange County National Golf Resort and Lodge.

Two models of Set-Up COBRA KING SPEEDZONE XTREME (SZ), drivers are available for golfers who want to upgrade their drivers. COBRA Golf now offers a KINGSPEEDZONE STYLE and a King Speedzone XTREME. Both drivers share the same chassis. However, they have some distinct differences. Before looking at their differences, let’s see what the two models have in common.

COBRA Golf claims their new KING SPEEDZONE line are their longest and most powerful drivers. This driver’s look is inspired from motorsports. You can see some of this inspiration just by looking at their “dual exhaust” inside of the rear of the trailing edge. CNC-milled faces like the KINGSZ drivers are similar to those we saw last year with the KINGF8. Just that this face has a twist, or shall I say a face with an infinity symbol which of course means “no limits” or “endless”.

Infinity Face’ is one of several technologies found in the KING SZ. Infinity Face. Infinity Face gives the user an enhanced sweet spot and increased ball speed throughout the entire face.

The T-Bar Chassis was first introduced in this year. The T-Bar Chassis is a section of the interior part that runs from the leading edge all of the way to the trailing edge. The cross-member COBRA Golf R&D created a stronger frame which improved the durability and feel of the KING SZ Driver.

Are you drawn to the appearance of carbon fiber? The KING SZ driver is the perfect choice for you. The KING SZ is equipped with a 360 Carbon Wrap. 360 Carbon Wrap covers 50% of the body. The use of all of the carbon fiber allowed COBRA Golf to move a staggering 25-grams of discretionary weight to use elsewhere. This is an absolute luxury in golf club design. Engineers could create a driver full of forgiveness and flexibility by moving the weight.

Is The Cobra Speedzone Xtreme Driver Forgiving?

High MOI Design gives you the last speed limit. Strategically placed weight is around the perimeter to create a driver head that’s extremely forgiving when it misses the center. My Golf Spy voted the Xtreme to be the most patient driver in the year. After a few rounds, I felt completely at ease.

What is faster, Speedzone Xtreme Or The Cobra Speedzone.

Speedzone has the superior player. It offers a sleeker profile with high performance. Speedzone Xtreme can provide a safer and more accommodating driver.

What Is The Difference Between The Speedzone And Speedzone Xtreme Driver?

Speedzone Xtreme gives you a 12-degree loft. Speedzone Xtreme provides a 12 degree lift to both models. While the Speedzone’s weight ports are located in the front, back and side for tweaking launch, the Xtreme only has a port at the rear. January 31, 2020

Are Cobra Speedzone Drivers Good?

Cobra is pursuing a CNC-machined face. It seems that it has found the “face without limits” for its driver. The combination of five performance zones gives the KING SWEETZONE driver an amazing balance of power, consistency, and speed. This driver is destined to be in my bag because of its attractive looks and adaptability. Mar 18, 2020
