Picking Up Prescriptions

To be clear, when we say “picking up a prescription” or “filling a prescription”, we’re specifically talking about picking up medication on somebody else’s behalf at the pharmacy.

This means that the prescription for a patient has already been completed.

We do not mean getting a physician to write a prescription for somebody else. Doctors only write prescriptions for their specific patients.

Generally, the process to pick up a prescription for yourself is simple.

• The doctor sends the prescription electronically to the pharmacy, via fax or by handwriting a prescription.
• The pharmacy is called by the patient to collect prescriptions.
• Pharmacy fills prescription, and charges patient for the medication.

Most pharmacies will only require the patient’s name, date of birth, and valid form of payment to pick up a prescription. However, some medications, for example, controlled medication, will require a valid ID.

Make sure to use the label

It doesn’t matter what method you use to refill your prescription. It will make it easier if all of the information is available. The label usually has all the information you require.

The medicine bottle is typically wrapped with the prescription label. Some medicines, such as eye drops or skin creams, may have the prescription label stuck to the outside box. Make sure you check the outer box before you get your prescription.

If your prescription can be refilled but the carton or bottle was thrown away, what do you do? You can call or go in person to the pharmacy where you got the prescription filled and ask them to look it up in their database. If you refill your prescription before that date, you should be able to place your order with no problem. If the prescription label states “Refills required authorization”, or your previous refills are expired, then you will need to contact the doctor that prescribed the medication. The pharmacy may be able to fill your prescription, sometimes the doctor will need to meet you and talk with you.

What is the Walgreens’ policy on prescriptions being kept for?

Two representatives of Walgreens corporate customer service told us that a prescription will be held by Walgreens for seven days. We called Walgreens pharmacies in Arizona, Florida, and New York — as well as Duane Reade pharmacies (owned by Walgreens) in New York and New Jersey — to confirm. The representatives of Walgreens pharmacies said that they keep prescriptions on file for 7 days. While the other two said that they have prescriptions on file for twelve days. However, the pharmacy representatives in Arizona, Florida and New York told us that three calls must be made before filling a prescription. Duane Reade representatives noted that they also offer text reminders. Once a prescription is back on the shelf, if you still need it, you can call the pharmacy and request that it fills the prescription again.

Select the Best Refill Option for You

Has your doctor included refills on your prescription? Check the label. If the label shows a number next to the “refills” section, that’s how many times you can get more of your medicine without going back to see your doctor.

You have many options to fill your prescription.

• Phone. To request a refill, call the number on your prescription label. Most large pharmacies or chain stores have automated menus that you can use anytime, day or night (though of course you’ll have to wait for store hours to pick up your refill). The voice prompts will lead you through the process. At smaller pharmacies, you might speak to the pharmacist or pharmacy technician directly. You also can download smartphone apps that let you refill your prescription without making a phone call.
• Online. Online.
• Mail. Regular users of medicine (e.g., those who use it every day to treat a medical condition) may be able to refill their prescriptions via mail. This option is convenient because you can often get your medicine in batches (say, a 3-month supply of allergy pills) if your doctor gives you a prescription for that amount. Ask your doctor about this option. You should plan in advance if you wish to mail your medication. It can take as long as 2 weeks for it to arrive.

If your prescriptions are covered by health insurance, be sure to tell the pharmacy if your insurance has changed since you last filled your prescription. Ask questions if you aren’t sure of the price or co-pay. This will ensure that you do not get an unanticipated surprise. You may be able to fill prescriptions at your preferred location with some health insurance plans.

How Long Do You Have To Pick Up A Prescription

A Controlled Substance Refill Can You Get Early?

If you require an immediate refill of controlled substances in an emergency, it is important to contact your doctor immediately.

Your healthcare provider can request an earlier refill by contacting Walgreens or any other pharmacy. Walgreens will require a written and signed prescription from you in order to obtain the medication.

Unless otherwise specified in the prescription, you will only be able to obtain medications for use during the specified treatment period.

Can Someone Else Pick Up My Prescription?

Simply stated, the answer is yes. In many cases someone can take your prescription.

There are often a few additional things that a person may need.

For example, if the doctor gave a written prescription, the person picking up the medication will need the written prescription in order to have it filled at the pharmacy.

Most pharmacies will also require some sort of verification that you know the patient. It could be a patient’s date of birth or name. Although, arriving at the pharmacy to pick up a specific prescription for the individual is enough for some pharmacists.

It comes down ultimately to the professional judgement of the pharmacist when giving permission for another person to take a prescription.

Electronic prescriptions

Your doctor can electronically transmit the order to your pharmacy. According to the DEA, “a practitioner will be able to issue electronic controlled substance prescriptions only when the electronic prescription or EHR application the practitioner is using complies with DEA’s requirements.”

Pharmacies are very likely to accept these orders because they have met standards set by the DEA. Moreover, these prescriptions will contain information the pharmacist will need to conclude that the prescription was for a legitimate medical purpose.

Can Someone Else Pick Up My Controlled Substance Prescription?

Most cases can be handled by someone other than the patient to pick up prescriptions for controlled substances.

These medications do require extra attention from those who are acting for the patient.

California’s law states, for example, that “no prescription of controlled substances shall be transmitted via an oral order or electronic transmission order to any person who is not known or unable to establish their identity.”

In other words, the person will need to have a valid form of ID in order to receive the medication.

It all comes down again to the professional judgement of the pharmacist. Always check with your pharmacy before you leave to confirm their policies.

Be sure to not run out

The most difficult part of refilling your prescription is knowing when to stop. It could prove frustrating to have to wait to order your next prescription. Even a single missed dose can pose a danger to your health.

On the flip side, if you try to get a jump on things and place a refill weeks in advance, your insurance might not cover it. So keep your eye on the bottle and try to time your refill so the pharmacy has a few days to get things ready for you — especially if they’re going to need to contact your doctor.
