In the average American family, no one wants to overspend on groceries. It’s the easiest thing in the world to do – just try walking into a Wegmans or Kroger for only one item – but we all do our best to avoid it.
Is Aldi Cheaper Than Walmart In 2022?
Aldi may not be as cheap or cheaper than Walmart in certain areas, such as produce and seafood. Walmart, whose stores outnumber Aldi 2-to-1, has dropped prices on many of their store brand, Great Value, items. Aldi sometimes isn’t the best value, though it can be quite a bit more.
Let’s take a look at some common and popular grocery products and compare what happens when they go toe-toe.
For simplicity sake, here is my basic method.
Aldi and Walmart prices might differ slightly depending upon where they’re situated. Aldi does list prices online but not Instacart. In this case Aldi lists their prices on the website. My receipts date back one year.
Walmart.com provided the information I required. The location and price were set to a city within the Great Lakes Region.
The only thing I did was compare popular grocery products.
If there is no alternative, the items can be compared by price per unit or pound. I also noted any weight differences.
A final disclaimer. Prices may change at anytime in any location. Although I tried to be accurate, the price listed is only a snapshot and not an official price list.
It is not surprising that Aldi has beaten Walmart in a number of produce price categories.
While shoppers have complained that Aldi’s produce isn’t always up to par, the stores purportedly receive new shipments every day (and the stock gets rotated – oldest produce on the top).
*Note* Tyson brand pork loin is the only one comparable to Walmart’s.
As you can see, Aldi beats out Walmart on meat prices across the board, with one exception: seafood.
*Note – Walmart only stocks Thomas brand bagel strips.
Because Walmart does not carry their own bagel thins brand, I used the Thomas brand to substitute. Walmart compares even less favorably than they might if they made their own.
Aldi bread prices won the day in all categories except for three.
Aldi’s specialty, vanilla flavored ice cream isn’t comparable to Walmart prices. Walmart makes their own.
Aldi, however, will sell you something comparable. They are extremely popular.
Walmart remains competitive in pasta and grains, beating Aldi even when instant white rice comes into play.
You can still save money on your rice by buying Aldi Jasmine rice bags if there is an abundance of rice in your home.
Walmart can help you save money if your family likes Triscuit knockoffs or chips. Aldi comes out on top in nearly every other category of snacks.
Walmart undercharges versus Aldi in just one pantry category (raw honey), but that doesn’t seem terribly surprising, given Aldi’s history as a post-WWII grocer with the cheapest basics for a country rebuilding after a catastrophe.
Aldi has the lowest prices when you want to buy condiments or oils.
If you’re a regular baker, you have to appreciate Aldi’s ultra-low prices on these essentials.
The best-selling item in the box, with a 50c price tag of baking soda, is 32cs less than Walmart’s already pocket-friendly pricing.
It’s important that you remember that dairy prices are subject to fluctuation. Aldi beats Walmart every time, with the exception of a 1-cent difference for butter.

Aldi is not always cheaper than Walmart, but that shouldn’t discourage shoppers. Aldi will not charge you more per item if you aren’t cooking a meal with seafood, but you won’t notice a significant difference in the long-term.
Walmart is still competitive thanks to their Great Value Store brand. You won’t regret making one stop at the Walmart Supercenter if you have other needs – clothes, office supplies and video games.
