Driver Models – Ping G425 Max Vs Lst Vs Sft

  • The Max
  • Low Spin Technology (LST)
  • SFT (Straight Flight Tech)

The Max driver logically replaces the “Plus” from the G410 series, while the LST and SFT carry through.

In their search for the best trajectory, spin reduction, and optimal carry/rollout for themselves and others, confident drivers will gravitate to the G425 LST model. Those who are less experienced or looking to fix a problem will choose the G425 SFT due to its fixed weight and draw bias.

Players both high and low handicap will enjoy the benefits and forgiveness of the Max model with its ease of use and fairway finding tendencies.

Summary

The MAX is very forgiving but it does spin. Even if your swing speed isn’t the fastest and you slice the ball, ask your PING club fitter to try the LST (low spin head). The head is 445cc in comparison to the MAX at 466, but it’s still very flexible and can help you get more yards.

There is also a G425 SFT head. For players who are fighting against strong slices, this head is heavily drawn bias. If you were to favour this head, I would put it back and get some lessons to help iron out that slice. As that shot shape will be throughout all your shots and the game will be an unnecessary challenge from the first tee to the last approach shot.

Performance – My Test Results

The focus on this edition of the Max head is MAX-imum forgiveness.

  • Consistent production of ball speed throughout the face
  • You can find the fairway using a tighter dispersion.

Both are accomplished by the Max. Ping might not be able to win general awards for ball speed or distance but the G425 Max has been consistent.

In my testing with its siblings, the Max tended to produce the tightest lateral dispersion, allowing me to find the fairway in a similar position most often.

Toe and heel strikes are less noticeable from a feedback perspective than with the SFT and LST, and are less pronounced when looking at ball flights.

A proper hook or slice will always pull the ball off the fairway, however, balls that are within the reach of the middlemost turbulators can be played.

Reasonable off-center strikes with similar swingspeed still produced respectable drives with a loss of around 10-15 yards.

Ping G425 Lst

Is this the one you’ve all been waiting for? It’s the One I Have Been Waiting For, with its two-time Most Wanted win status and almost two-time status in mine bag.

The plot is largely spoiled. The PING G425 LST driver is, well, a PING LST driver and what that means hasn’t changed.

It is slightly smaller and more compact than the G425 MAX, but it has the same power. By the numbers, that makes it a bit more aerodynamic, though the shorter typical build lengths tend to offset any swing speed gains.

It’s the lowest spinning of the PING G425 drivers. It is expected to spin at 600 rpm more than the G425 MAX driver, and about 200 rpm lower than the previous-gen G410LST ($399).

Callaway Rogue St Max Driver Overview

The Callaway Rogue ST Max driver actually mirrors some of the features of the Ping G425.

The Callaway Rogue ST Max is similar to the Ping G425. It has a titanium frame with lightweight. And while the design and name may be different both the dragonfly bracing system of the G425 and the Jailbreak bars of the Callaway Rogue ST Max serve the same purpose: increase stability for the increased flex of the face.

The Callaway Rogue ST Max proved to be more accommodating than the Ping G425. It was more friendly for slower swing speeds and was therefore more comfortable. It has a carbon fiber crown and sole so it’s actually lighter than the Ping G425.

Callaway Rogue ST Max Max was also longer-lasting for higher handicap testers. All of our test subjects, regardless of their handicap, were able to get better launch angles.

Ping G425 Lst – Low Spin Done Differently

I would remind you that PING’s version of low spin isn’t the same as most everyone else’s. Because the PING G425LST is still a driver, MOI will not be compromised in order to chase low spin.

MOI should shake out at about 5,100 or so. This is a plus or minus depending on where much of the stock market stuff falls. That speaks to PING’s commitment to keeping spin rates reasonably low and forgiveness relatively high.

With the G425 LST, PING seeks to create a playable low-spin condition but not necessarily kill spin and kill it dead. If you want to play as low spins possible, I would wager that a TaylorMade SIM2 (or Titleist TSi4) will be more successful.

Only 17g is the weight of the trajectory-tuning CG Shifter in the PINGG425 LST driver, which equals approximately eight percent of your head. That’s good for about seven yards of left/right correction which should be enough for the typical LST player.

The PING G425 LST driver is available in nine and 10.5 degrees.

Ping G425 Max Driver

The simplest description I can offer of the G425 MAX Driver is this. This is the G400 MAX’s love child, the G410 Plus. It offers the adjustability of the latter with the massive MOI of the former.

Your one-sentence bottom line – the PING G425 MAX isn’t just the most forgiving driver in the PING G425 driver lineup, it’s the most forgiving driver the company has ever produced.

For a company that’s more or less led the league in MOI for the last several years, pushing up against the USGA limit for front-to-back MOI while driving total MOI over 10,000 … that’s one hell of an accomplishment.

It would be absurd to do this in an ordinary-shaped car designed for the largest driver market.

How to Learn About The Ping G425 Drivers

Ping G425 drivers, the most recent iteration in its immensely successful G-series are now available. The Ping G driver was the first to get it all started in 2016. Ping G was the first driver to drive their club in 2016. Ping continues to refine, tune, and improve its performance year after year while keeping a simple premise. Offering a blend of power, distance, and a fair helping of forgiveness when you need it most.

We all need forgiveness on a long par five with the ‘big stick’ in our hand. This is a known fact.

This year’s drivers will have a few things that are a bit different. Note I said a little different. Ping has shown a fair amount of restraint and held back against the golf industry’s tendency to add as many buzzwords and gimmicks as it can.

Let’s say you played with Ping drivers in the past 5 years. You’ll see some familiar features, as well as some small enhancements that will make it a favorite for the upcoming golf season.

The Ping G425MAX is the first driver I will be focusing on. It promises to be a great all-rounder. We’ll then move on to more detailed LST and FFT drivers.

Let’s dive straight in…

The Balance and Weight

All of the standard shaft weights of the Ping drivers vary from model to model, depending on the flex of the shaft you choose. For instance, the Ping Alta CB55 Red on the Ping G410 SFT comes in 4 flex options, so the weight ranges from 56g to 66g. Ping Alta CB55 Slate shaft is used in the Ping G425LST. It also offers a variety of flex options. The head weights on these drives are all around 200g, give or take a few grams.

Balance is a matter of balance. Shafts that have the balance point in the center are considered to be balanced. Shafts that are more toward the shaft butt than the balance point are considered counter-balanced. This is rarely added as a specification of the driver, though the balance point can adjust the swingweight, so it is something to consider.

Here’s What You Should Know About the Ping G425 Max Driver

RRP: PS450

Lofts: 9deg / 10.5deg / 12deg

Max becomes Plus

Ping was criticized by many golfers for not being on the movable weight bandwagon when the company revealed the G410 Plus, their first driver to have a movable CG in 2019, in which they were the G410 Plus. Ping, being Ping (basically they are an engineering company) wouldn’t make a model with a movable weight until it was possible to include a track with zero compromises on MOI or forgiveness.

Ping G410 Plus is now the Ping G425 Max. The G425 Max has a 460cc head that is rounder in shape than the LST model, and thanks to a 26g CG shifter (which is 10g more than the G410 Plus) you get 7% more MOI forgiveness than you did from the Ping G410 Plus.

Ping G425 Driver Key Takeaways

  • The PING G425 Series of drivers is finally coming to North America and Europe.
  • The retail price will be approximately $500

Given the consistently excellent performance of PING drivers in Most Wanted testing over the last several years, expectations for the G425 lineup should rightfully be among the highest of any models hitting the U.S. market this year.

Still, it’s hard to overlook the buzz-killing reality that PING G425 drivers have been available in Australia and on the PGA TOUR for months. Combine that with the fact that PING is never the loudest or flashiest and there’s a chance the PING G425 drivers could get lost in the chaotic flurry of the spring release cycle regardless of their impressive debut elsewhere.

Nevertheless, despite a relatively subdued new color scheme and a less than sensational backstory, I like PING’s chances.

Most Wanted test results over the last few years have demonstrated PING’s standard models/Plus to be stable, top-ofthe-table performers. SFT is the best slice-killer, and LST takes top honours in each of its two versions.

Ping G425 Max – Shot Shape Correction

That’s obviously a bonus but here’s the really cool thing. The significantly heavier (relative to G410) weight allowed PING to accomplish nearly the same level of shot shape correction with a significantly narrower range of moment.

You got me. Nearly can be interpreted as an indicator of a small compromise. PING G425 Max provides eight- to nine yard worth of shot correction through the fade and draw positions. That’s down about one yard from the G410 Plus.

MOI being within the USGA’s tolerance limit means that PING can get that extra yard.

The Details:

In the G425 driver series, the primary model is named Max as it elevates the moment of inertia (MOI) to PING’s highest level in history and provide golfers the most forgiving driver in golf. To best suit a golfer’s swing and launch conditions, the G425 Max also includes the LST and SFT.

To achieve the new performance levels in the G425 Max (9o, 10.5o, 12o lofts), PING engineers combined key technologies from the G400 Max and G410 Plus. This 26-gram tungsten weight movable weigh has resulted in an increase in the MOI of the 460cc heads. It is possible due to weight savings thanks to advances in driver’s dragonfly Crown technology.

The weight can be positioned at distinctive settings over a smaller area than G410 Plus/LST to help shift the center of gravity lower and farther back without sacrificing performance elsewhere in the design. The CG-shifting weight can be secured in one of three settings — neutral, draw or fade — to influence forgiveness and shot shape for maximum performance. The average MOI increase is 14% across the three weight positions compared to the G410 Plus, with three combinations of weight position and loft exceeding a combined MOI of 10,000 (gm-cm2).

For golfers who commonly miss their tee shots to the right, the 460cc SFT version (10.5o loft) is engineered with draw bias to help bring shots back on-line and into the fairway. The G425 Max model has a 23-gram fixed tungsten backweight that moves the CG closer towards the heel. This promotes a left-to-right shot bend of 25 yards. The ball flight correction is also affected by a lighter swingweight (D1).

To help contribute to increases in swing speed and ball speed, all three models share proven PING driver innovations, including turbulators for reduced aerodynamic drag and the proprietary T9S+ forged face to accelerate face flexing for more distance. The internal rib structure of the Ti-8-1-1 body makes for an improved sound quality and solidity. The models also have the 8-position, lightweight hosel that allows for loft (+-1.5o), lie (3o flatter) adjustment to dial in your ball flight.

Ping G425 Stock Shafts

Finally, PING is offering four stock shafts across the G425 driver lineup.

PING ALTA CB Slate, which is an evolution of its ALTA line, is available. This stock option is lightweight and counterbalanced, which should result in the best launch (and spin!) of all stocks.

The mid-launch option is the Mitsubishi Tensei Raw Orange.

The PING Tour remains in the lineup as a mid-low launch option. Another in-house offering, the profile isn’t dissimilar from the Aldila Tour Green.

Aldila Rogue White is the lowest spin and launch option within the PING G425 driver range. For those who require it, the stiffer tip will help to bring spin and launch down.

Ping G425 Driver

G425 Max Driver raises moment of inertia to the highest in PING history, and provides golfers with the most forgiving driver. Joining the G425 Max are the LST (Low Spin Technology) and SFT (Straight Flight Technology) to best match a golfer’s swing and launch conditions.

Which Ping Driver is the Most Tolerable?

The most forgiving ping driver to date is the G425 Max. The G425 Max actually ranked 1st on our list of most accommodating drivers.

Start

Launch angle and speed are the two main factors that determine how far or high your ball can go. Like with many of the other features, there is no set angle for every golfer, so you do need to try out a few Ping drivers to figure out the best launch angle and spin rate for you based on how fast you swing the club and the speed of the ball when it leaves the tee.

How To Pick The Best Ping Driver

Callaway Epic Max

Or if you much prefer Callaway, their somewhat equivalent driver is the Epic Max. It’s also got several adjustable weights and such similar to Ping’s G425 Max. If you’re interested in learning more, read the Callaway Epic Max review.

  • PING Alta Distanza shaft
  • Soft regular, regular, stiff and extra stiff flex

Ti9S+ Face

The craze for face and material stories is a big thing right now, but I have nothing to offer. PING has been using Ti9s+ for a while now. It’s satisfied with the performance and to date hasn’t found anything that it can shape into faster, more resilient faces with higher tolerances.

It will find something more, but it is not difficult to see that the PING method has worked well.

  • Fully adjustable 17-gram rear weight with a draw, fade, and neutral setting
  • Clubheads of smaller 445cc
  • Big on distance, but much less forgiving

Performance

Let’s go to the bottom of the matter: Was PING able to maintain adjustability on the G410 Plus, while simultaneously increasing forgiveness? Yes. That promise is fulfilled in big ways by the G425 Max.

In testing the G425 Max head to head with my G410 Plus, the most obvious difference was the superior forgiveness of the G425 Max. G425 Max’s mishits were consistently less frequent due to a stronger launch and higher spin numbers. On the course, that means there’s less distance between your best swings and all the rest. In comparing the G425 Max to the rest of the market, I don’t think there’s anything that’s quite on its level for forgiveness. If you want maximum consistency off the tee, I would suggest bagging the G425 Max driver.

It is remarkable that the G425 Max can achieve this increased forgiveness without sacrificing adjustability. You can also use the adapter from the previous driver, which allows you to use all of the shafts in the eight same positions. The loft can be adjusted as high or low as 1.5 degrees. There are three options for the 26 gram weight at the back: Draw, Neutral and Fade. Each position has a noticeable impact on the ball flight and the position of the sweet spot.

As one of the leaders in custom fitting, PING offers a great array of stock shafts in the G425 Max driver. There are three proprietary models: ALTA CB 55 Slate, PING Tour, and Alta Distanza. For the player that wants a hot aftermarket shaft in their driver, PING also offers the Aldila Rogue White 130 MSI [review HERE ] and Mitsubishi TENSEI AV Orange in 55 and 65 gram weights.

The Test

In October, I visited Ping to have the shaft length and type fitted to me for my driver. I wasn’t allowed to hit the G425 (it was top secret back then) but I did trial the G410 heads and found the LST 9 degree was best suited to me, with a Ping Tour 65 shaft. So when I received the G425 Driver it was the LST model with the same shaft, giving me the club that is best suited to me so that I could give a true evaluation.

The driver was compared to the G410 LST at LSH Auto and Mercedes Benz Stockport with Trackman 4 balls. Reddish Vale Golf Club invited me to give it a try during several rounds.

Review of the Ping G425 Lst driver

Looks and Feel The G425 driver looks amazing! You’ve probably read my driver reviews. I like a compact, matte-black, classic, and simple head shape. Ping is a great example of all these things.

The turbulators now feel more natural, with the color changing from a dark silver to a slate/black.

It’s somewhat nostalgic to the days of Ping Anser Driver, who was my favourite driver when I was playing Ping Contract Tour.

Never underestimate the feeling of comfort in golf, it’s a place where we all play our best. When I am looking at the Ping clubs, it looks just like a Ping traditional golf club, it gives me great comfort.

You can feel it everywhere, including the range sessions on a January night and the opening tee at the US Open. Ping drivers were always in my hands on every tour drive. I was never disappointed by it – the perfect fairway finder.

Ping states that it’s easier to hit the ball farther when it touches the short grass. That is why they have their R&D focus on technology. However, as someone who believes themselves to be an accurate driver of the ball it might also make it possible for me gain a few extra yards.

The sound is also reminiscent of a Ping. It’s high-pitched and loud. This makes it a familiar noise to everyone. This hasn’t really changed from the last couple of driver models in my opinion. Like they claim that “nothing is like a Mizuno”, so I also believe that “nothing sounds like a Piping”.

Ping G425 Drivers – What You Must Know

Ping G425 driver is the latest evolution of its G-series. In 2016, the Ping G driver started it all. Since then, year on year, Ping has refined, tuned, and tweaked their clubs’ performance while trying to keep a basic premise in mind. On a long par 5, with the “big stick” in our hands, we all require forgiveness. This is a truth.
