First Impressions On The Range

These bad guys were first taken to the range by us for some side-by-side comparison. Just by looking at them, we could pretty much tell what to expect from them.

The PXG 0311 Gen 5 driver has a smaller footprint than the PXG 0311 Gen 5 XF driver so right away, we expected the XF driver to be more forgiving and maybe even play a little longer for our high handicap testers – and we were right.

Our higher handicap testers liked the PXG 0311 Gen 5 XF driver more because it has a longer face heel to toe which provides more wiggle room in terms of accuracy. However, they were not able to reach the distances that our lower handicap testers achieved with the standard PXG 0311 Gen 5 driver.

After three rounds, the average distance of our test drivers with the PXG0311 Gen 5 driver was 231 yards. Our testers were limited to 224 miles with the PXG0311 Gen 5 driver.

The Pxg Driver Face Design

PXG uses thermoplastic elastomer in the driver face just like they do in their irons. It is lighter than steel and more efficient. To reduce sound and weight, engineers at PXG placed the elastomer above the sole in order to make the driver more agile.

When viewed visually, the PXG0811X’s crown is matte black. It is also long from heel to toe when compared to its physical form. Also, the soles come in matte black and have silver-adjustable weights.

Carbon composite is used to make the crown, which helps reduce weight and produces a lower spin than other PXG drivers models.

Overall verdict for face design is that it’s sexy, matte black, and lightweight which PXG prides itself for. These drivers, in the words Bob Parson of their owner, are “the duck’s nuts.”

So What Is It About The Pxg 0811X And 0811Lx Drivers That Make Them Special?

The unique design allows for more speed and distance. Drivers can sometimes be very forgiving with the driver’s tee. This is all you can expect from your big stick. It’s stunningly black and very appealing.

This design features 16 adjustable weights within the clubhead to ensure the best set-up for every golfer. Also featuring the PXG Precision Weighting System, there are actually thousands of combinations of set up that can be worked through to create the perfect club for your swing, swing speed and ball flight.

You can adjust the hosel for the perfect loft and lie. The driver actually comes with a nine degree or 10.5 degree head, but the loft can be adjusted by 0.75 degrees through each turn–adding even more possibilities to the set up of the club. The number of variations that can be achieved by one driver is amazing.

These drivers, the PXG 0811X or 0811LX, are not cheap. They sit at the very top of the price scale for drivers. But it is a premium product and one in which a whole lot of effort has gone into creating. The PXG0811 series will solve any problems you may have with drawing, fades, and blocking. But for its price, it almost certainly needs to be custom-fit to get the right combination–otherwise you’ll be left scratching your head and wondering just what to adjust next.

The sound off the club head is something to behold, as good a sound as you’re likely to get from any driver. Carbon fibre crowns are lighter because they’re made of carbon fiber. It has a low center of gravity thanks to the variable titanium alloy design and weighting system.

You should expect a more powerful and penetrating flight. Your drives will be longer due to the lower spin levels. Expect more accuracy off the tee too. If money is no object, consider trying the PXG 0811X and 0811LX drivers– they could change your game forever.

Pxg 0811 Xf Gen4 Driver

As was the case with the GEN2 model, the 0811 XF GEN4 driver is PXG’s most forgiving. Previous XFs were unable to exceed USGA’s MOI limits. There’s no reason for this to change with the GEN4 model.

While “forgiveness” can be used in marketing, it is also one of those words that we wish to use. However, PXG’s robot testing has shown that the XF produces the closest dispersion among its three GEN4 drivers models.

That’s what the math says should happen.

The Most Wanted Driver Testing data supports the claim that the 0811XF is among the best in the industry when it comes to ball speed preservation on mis-hits.

The GEN4 series has a three-weight design. This means that MOI will be higher with the heaviestweight in the back. All GEN4 models, however, retain the flexibility to introduce some draw bias (heavy weight in the heel position) or trade a little bit of MOI for some additional speed by moving the heavy weight to the front position.

The PXG XF’s unique selling point is its low CG design that helps to reduce excessive spin, despite having a high MOI. It’s perhaps an underappreciated though purposeful and well-executed component of the XF franchise.

This brings me to the main discussion point, do you know what your Cg is?

What most people think of when discussing center of gravity is its relationship to the face of the club. That’s important as it can dramatically affect the height of the shots you hit. However, the spin and sound are greatly influenced by the CG of the head and its distance from the hosel. Perhaps the greatest change in the last few years equipment has been the focus on spin and its benefits for distance. This approach hampered designers’ ability to make sure MOI and gear effect worked to allow for longer, more precise drives. PXG has created a low-weight driver with PXG 0811X’s weight and a low vertical CG to allow for TONS more forgiveness.

This driver might not be the longest driver on the market today, but this brings faster ball speed, and one of the most forgiving drivers we’ve ever used.

Callaway utilized a lighter Titanium alloy with more aluminum to reduce its weight and maintain strength.

Performance Review for Pxg 0811X

This driver was a lucky opportunity to play with me at a sales event for golf clubs. Although my opinions may be persuasive, I urge you to do your research and to test it out yourself.

The club face is able to feel most shots well and has an excellent sweet spot for feel. But a lot of times when I felt like I hit the sweet spot, the ball still didn’t look to great in real life from a ball flight and performance stand point.

It was hard to tell if I actually mis-hit it or not, but judging by the outcome of the shots I could tell they weren’t my best drives sometimes. My current Titleist driver is able to tell almost immediately if I have mishit.

It doesn’t make a high-pitched pinging sound as most drivers. It’s muted, and sounds more like a click sound than a popping sound.

Ball flight was indeed low. I tend to hit lower driver shots already so I tested the 10.5 degree to try and get some extra launch but my swing still produced low flying shots with lots of roll.

While I’m used to low driver shots, I would honestly prefer to find a driver that helps me hit higher shots so I can actually feel like I bombed my drives instead of watching a low running ball.

I was able to control the car. However, I did have my occasional hook just like my driver. The low flight made it seem more serious. You give up control when your launch angle goes down hence why wedges and higher lofted irons tend to fly higher and straighter than woods and drivers.

The performance was good overall. Distance was great, club speed was high and ball speed was high. The price is prohibitive and I don’t think it worth the cost. Upgrades to a driver from another manufacturer like TaylorMade or Callaway are better options than continuing with Titleist for a lower price. More details below!

Callaway Mavrik Driver

Callaway offers plenty of hot drivers, and some of them leave the 0211 in the dust. Others are not as well-equipped. The closest one in terms of performance is the Mavrik driver. The Mavrik driver has similar rail technology to forgive, but it also features Jailbreak technology that is close by the Mavrik’s face. This gives the Mavrik an advantage. So, it does perform a little better in terms of forgiveness and arguably looks better. Is it worth paying an extra price, considering that the distance is likely to be less? That’s up to you to decide.

Here’s a little bit about Pxg

PXG was founded only in 2014. You’d be hard-pressed to not have met them at the pro shop or course. You may also have seen their marketing efforts.

They aren’t nearly as common as TaylorMade and Ping brands. PXG is one of America’s fastest growing companies, and you can expect to see them on more courses in the future.

Their initial stock was aimed at the higher end of the price range. Their products, such as their iron range, still have high-end appeal. They now offer clubs to those who have less money like the PXG 0211. This driver is still expensive at +$200, but the driver is worth every penny for all of its tech, customizations, and other quality features. Our verdict on the 2021 PXG0211 Driver Review was very positive.

You Can Look Good!

The 0211 driver can be distinguished from the 0811X Proto driver by their address [review HERE]. There are slight differences in their shape and sizes, but one thing is constant – the Hybrid Crown Construction. It appears smaller than it actually is, with a head measuring 460cc.

You’ll be able to flip the driver over and see how the 0211 is different from the other PXG-branded drivers. Where PXG has been known for having lots of movable weights, the 0211 keeps it simple. It is the sole’s “PXG” silver branding that stands out.

The stock headcover in this instance is well worth noting. The material looks almost like denim and I find it very eye-catching. PXG included QuickStick Cart magnet Technology in the headcover. It allows you to attach it to your cart when you’re out on the golf course.

What’s New with the Pxg0311 Gen 5 Drivers

First, the PXG0311 Gen 5 drivers will be more appealing than the 0811 Gen 4 ones.

A multi-material crown was used by the 0811 Gen 4 drivers. It consisted of titanium and carbon fiber. It was designed to improve torsional stability and flexural flexibility of the head. It did have this effect but it left the crown looking a little busy.

With the PXG 0311 Gen 5 drivers, the crown looks much smoother. The crown is made entirely of carbon fiber, which dramatically lowers head weight.

Despite the fact that the PXG 0311 Gen 5 drivers have the same titanium face as the 0811 drivers, MOI in the newer drivers is greatly increased. There are weight ports that are positioned in the perimeter and anchored to the outer wall.

This can help increase the torsional stiffness of the multi-material titanium crown/carbon fiber.

Verdict

The PXG0811x Gen 2 is an excellent driver. I have already reviewed it twice. The sound quality and feel are excellent. Although they seem more lively than the previous PXG drivers, their quietness and strength is still impressive. More importantly, miss-hits feel good and also retain ball speed. The crown design, while unusual, doesn’t make it look terrible and allows for a better alignment along the fairway. While I personally don’t love the X alignment of golf, others will enjoy it. Maybe PXG would offer the option of using no alignment aid. It’s not surprising that they would. The flight can be reduced by using an adjustable hosel. Also, the spin rate and flight speed could be affected by changing the weights. Since I was having trouble hitting the ball left, the heel setting didn’t work for me. Although it was not the driver that I chose, the ball speeds and spin rates were comparable to the top drivers of the year. Although I didn’t end up with that driver, it was close enough for me to consider him my second choice. PXG is a standout despite the low price. The leather headcover adds a finishing touch. The price will no longer be a factor in choosing a PXG driver or not if it’s the best driver for you. That hurdle has now been removed from the equation.

Pxg 0211 Driver Average Launch Stats

The same could be said about the distance off the tee for the 0211. It certainly isn’t a slouch and definitely could be considered a game improver in terms of getting a few extra yards off the tee. But, that’s not the overall intention of this club, so it is outshone by drivers specifically designed to help improve distance.

The PXG 0211 is a fantastic middle-of the-road club for mid-handicap players who need a little more forgiveness but also want to have greater control over their game than clubs that are super-game improvement.

What Loft Options Does The Pxg 0811X Golf Driver Offer?

There are three choices: 9.0, 10.5, or 12.0 degree loft. Using the adjustable hosel you can also change the loft plus or minus 1.5 degrees. Since this driver is designed to produce low ball flight and low spin for longer distances, an amateur golfer may be better off choosing a higher loft option like the 10.5 or 12.

Pxg 0811 Gen4 Drivers – Stock Shafts

There are no stock shaft offerings for the GEN4 lineup. Instead, PXG is offering a selection of no upcharge options that include the Project X HZRDUS Smoke Series, Evenflow Riptide, Aldila NV and Diamana D+, among others. There are many other options available, with prices ranging between $100 and $300.

Difference Between The 0211 And The 0811

PXG 0811 has a lot in common with other clubs that we are familiar with.

This driver’s most notable feature is its extremely low launch speed and spin rate. It is due in part to its sloped crown design.

Performance is the biggest difference between the 0811 driver and the 0211 driver. The 0211 is more forgiving and better for high handicappers.

The Pxg 0311 Gen 5 Driver In 50 Words Or Less

The new PXG 0311 Gen 5 drivers represent some nice improvements over the 0811 Gen 4 model including a fully carbon fiber crown. The new drivers take everything that was great about the 0811 Gen 4 drivers and makes them better.

Form & Feel

The 0211 has a hollow shape, is smaller, precise, and has a much better feel than the Ping 425. The G425, however, is bigger and more durable.

In the looks department too, I think a lot of golfers will like the PXG 0211 better. You shouldn’t let that sway you though as beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.

Performance

Like many PXG-based drivers in the past, fine tuning was the key focus. The Proto driver comes in two versions: one for upward and one downward angles. In the past, there were tons of weights that could be moved. 0211 simplifies: One model is all that’s needed to allow everyone to drive longer distances.

Ball speed is the first and most important key. Due to its titanium face and Hybrid Crown Construction, the 0211 driver is able to achieve high ball speed on both center and outside. This driver is extremely stable, and I found that the ball speeds were constant high when it was held near the centre of the face.

You can also see this stability in the straightness and shape of the 0211. Good shaft fitting is vital – I used the HZRDUS Smoke Yellow to test this. This head minimizes curves on your drives. You can be sure that the ball will land in the fairway if it is in square with your face when you hit the ball.

Launch and spin are the final keys to the driver 0211 performing well for many players. A deep, low CG is key to this driver’s desire to launch in an upper window. The CG is also helpful in keeping spin within a moderately low range. I like this CG and it works great for those with lower spin or who are unable to lop off a few rpm.

Parsons eXtreme Golf, (PXG), is one of most recognizable and rapidly growing golf brands. It has risen quickly to become one of the leading club manufacturer in the world.

Bob Parsons, the owner and founder of PXG, is a straight shooting Texan businessman. Although I may not always get the reference, their clubs are “the duck’s nuts”.

Their irons rank among the top in the game. Inside the Eighty Club , we’ve had a number of members who have been fit for them and are absolutely in love.

However, it was important to me to understand how PXGs groundbreaking technology can be applied to long-term game…the driver.

I haven’t spoken with nearly as many people that have been playing their second generation driver (the PXG0811X).

You are fortunate to have it. I was playing around with it and decided it was time for me to let you know the results.

Pxg is on the Market Right Now

PXG 0811’s original driver was expensive for its poor performance. It’s clear that they woke up to the marketplace, and I would say now that the 0811 X GEN2 is a legitimate contender to the other big releases this year.

I don’t mean to be negative, but spending over $500 for a driver can seem like a large investment. As I have written reviews of driver releases, it is my same plea. Don’t blindly believe every OEM when they market their product. Before you decide to buy a driver you need to first try them. I’ve learned a lot about clubfitting, and I know for a fact that there is no such thing as the best driver for all golfers. The unique qualities of each golf club design will result in different outcomes, including the center-of gravity.

OK, rant over. Back to PXG.

The 0811 X GEN2 driver is a powerful one. Many people will see an improvement in their ball speed, launch conditions, and forgiveness. The 0811 X GEN2 won’t make you a pro golfer.

What Pxg Say About The 0811X Gen2 Driver:

Hot Rod Technology was inspired by American muscle cars and the appearance of the PXG0811 X GEN2 Driver.

PXG was a shocker in the golf industry since its launch, introducing new technology, unique marketing, and charging higher than usual. But does the new driver live up to the same standards, find out all the information in our PXG 0811x Gen 2 driver review.

Although PXG irons proved to be game-changers, offering power, forgiveness and feel that no other irons could match, the first two lines woods they made were only good. This is not the best. PXG pricing is a reason to demand excellence. PXG’s 0811 driver was spunny. The 0811x driver however, had a small sweet spot where it could get maximum performance. Although hybrids and Fairway woods were better performers than their predecessors, the Arizona-based company’s 0811X Gen 2 woods could be an amazing success story. It is a great choice not only for its performance, as it is, but also because of the incredible price. Its RRP of PS550 puts the club back into the mix. The mainstream driver is still quite expensive, but the RRP at PS550 makes it a solid contender.

What sets The Pxg0811XGen 2 apart from the rest?

This review focuses on the PXG0811x Gen 2 driver and what it offers that sets it apart from other models. The heads have Variable Face Technology, which increases ball speed when there are misses. There is also a Honeycomb TPE insert. The clubhead’s sound and feel are fine tuned by the lightweight material. However, it doesn’t add too much weight. This line has two drivers. O811x, a low-spin design, is the O811XF. The 0811XF has extra forgiveness. You can also find matching fairway hybrids and woods. Review of the PXG0811x Gen 2 revealed a darker face with a somewhat squatter design from front to rear. For low spin and high ball speed, the X has a weight-forward design. There are 9 interchangeable weights so shot shape and trajectory can really be influenced, with weight ports in the front and back of the head, plus towards the heel to add some draw bias.

The XF features a shorter head from front to back. The XF features weight further back and boasts the highest overall MOI on the market, right at the 5900 R&A limit, and over 10,000 MOI when you include the sole to crown MOI. Ping G400 Max has the best forgiveness but has a lower centre. It is super forgiving with a relatively low spin. Hybrids and fairways share the same technology, but are made of steel rather than titanium. Although the fairway head may be a little small, it is very easy to hit. PXG is now on a third consecutive hybrid. It is our favorite hybrid because of its head shape, size and adaptability.

The Verdict

Having reviewed the PXG 0811x Gen 2 on two separate occasions now, I can confirm that it is a great driver. The sound quality and feel are excellent. They seem a bit livelier than previous PXG drivers but they still manage to be quiet and strong which is quite impressive. More importantly, miss-hits feel good and also retain ball speed. Although the crown design is unusual, it doesn’t look bad and helps line up along the fairway. While I personally don’t love the X alignment of golf, others will enjoy it. Perhaps PXG could offer an option to use no alignment aid. I’m not surprised that they would. Adjustable hosel can lower the flight and the spin rate was affected by playing around with the weights. Since I was having trouble hitting the ball left, the heel setting didn’t work for me. Although it was not the driver that I chose, the ball speeds and spin rates were comparable to the top drivers of the year. I haven’t ended up in that driver but it was close enough to be my second choice. PXG stands out despite their low prices. The leather headcover adds a finishing touch. The price will no longer be a factor in choosing a PXG driver or not if it’s the best driver for you. That hurdle has now been removed from the equation.

The 0211 driver has an abundance of that both on center and off thanks to the titanium face, Hybrid Crown Construction, and high MOI.
