At the same loft, with the exact shaft, I was able test both the SIM MAX and SIM MAX drivers. This enabled me to easily see differences between both models. The highest launch stood out for me. The SIM was low launching, but the SIM MAX launched in the low end of my normal window. The SIM MAX launches at mid spin while the SIM MAX launches at low spin.
SIM MAX seemed to have a higher forgiveness score than SIM. On average, the SIM MAX gave me slightly better ball speed and better accuracy. My bad swings were more successful with the SIM MAX, according to my subjective assessment.
One feature that is new to the SIM driver family is Progressive Face Heights. TaylorMade analyzed the effects of impact points and handicaps to create the SIM drivers that have the right-sized faces. SIM driver is meant to be the smallest. SIM Max D has an 18% bigger face, while SIM Max D’s is 8.8 inches larger. Putting these drivers next to each other, the difference is obvious, and players should consider their visual preference when deciding between these clubs.
As to whether the SIM MAX is a substantial upgrade over last year’s M6, my answer is “No” (M6 driver review HERE ). Both drivers are very good – forgiving without a bunch of bells and whistles – but there’s nothing I see in the SIM that makes it a necessary upgrade if you’re gaming the M6.

Taylormade Sim Driver Verdict
Before I started this review I would have said the SIM would be the model for me but, dare I say it, it did do what it said too well. The spin sometimes dropped too much for my lower swing speed.
What impressed me most about the SIM Max was not being able to capture one. I never got a high spinning shot (over 3000 rpm) and so my distance never dropped.
I was surprised that this middle driver could perform at such a high level without needing to modify settings to decrease spin. The Inertia generator at the back definitely improved the ball’s flight without affecting its spin.
The Inertia Generator’s angle and shape made it difficult for me to see an increase in swing velocity. With the 20° angle of Inertia Generator, I am still not convinced. While it can be demonstrated in TaylorMade labs or by DJs swinging at the club in the slots, I am not convinced that we will all enjoy the benefits.
Why I chose this Club
I decided to buy this club because there was a killer deal on it at the time, and I really like Taylormade as a brand. Their wedges were already in my bag, and I loved them so much that I wanted the driver to follow.
While I had considered purchasing the Callaway Mavrik I ended up choosing the SIM Max due its low price and many good reviews. It didn’t have as much range, and I, a hungry teenager, needed something that was long lasting.
Verdict
We have to admit, the name SIM doesn’t quite have the powerful ring to it like the M-Series did, but the aesthetics of the SIM drivers certainly make up for it.
It is simply amazing in design and, as you can see from the video review of it, grows on you while you use it.
We love it at address. It contrasts beautifully with the carbon crown’s chalky white topline. It is amazing to see how such small changes can have such an impact on the eyes.
TaylorMade drivers have a great experience, both from a performance and a design perspective.
My club speed seemed to improve slightly with the Inertia Generator, which was slightly tilted. The SIM Max also produced some very promising numbers.
SIM Driver had a slow spinning driver which created a deep ball flight. SIM Max was a bit more spunky and produced a greater ball flight.
SIM Max offered more forgiveness, but was my preferred driver because it maintained the distance of an old stick.
Cons:
No dramatic improvements over previous models
In 2020 the SIM and SIM Max drivers were released. They are next on the same path as the previous year’s M drivers. Speed injected twist faces technology and the MOI soleweight are still available. However, this year it has been applied slightly differently. This review will be focusing on the SIM Max. However, the SIM Max has a slightly smaller face and offers more adjustment.
The first thing that we saw about the driver was its amazing looks. You can see that the base of the driver is now cleaner than before. And the combination of metallic and dark colors creates a beautiful, sleek design.
In terms of performance, TaylorMade say that this driver is offering more forgiveness than ever before and that they have geometrically optimized the sole weight to further increase MOI. According to the idea, the swing should be aerodynamically more efficient and therefore faster. Additionally, it has been engineered to launch slightly faster than other models.
TaylorMade liked the face-to-face interaction of M drivers, and no changes were made to speed infusion technology. As we’ve come to expect, the ball rockets off the face, and it’s been specially designed to help you out when you strike the ball on parts of the face which usually causes problems. It is also very sounding.
There’s no denying that TaylorMade has been able to increase ball speeds over the years, but it’s likely that they are now facing the problem of diminishing returns. This is a great driver, and the new sole weight seems to make a slight difference, but any improvements in performance may feel insignificant to most players.
Last Thoughts
TaylorMade’s technology in golf clubs continues to evolve. With its smart MOI weight and speed-injected faces, the SIM Max is an excellent driver. The club may be a good choice for players who perform at an elite level and who believe they might benefit from some extra clubhead speed or MOI.
Higher handicappers can also join in the fun. Even though the clubface has been optimized for speed and ease, the clubface also features a carefully placed CG that will allow you to achieve the perfect amount of loft.
If you currently play with the TaylorMade M5 or M6, don’t expect a huge transformation to occur when you pick up the SIM Max – however, you can rest assured that this driver is a quality piece of kit.

Aerodynamic improvements are one big story and SIM really stands for “Shape In Motion”.
Inertia Generator located on the sole stores a lot of weight down and to the back in your clubhead making it extremely forgiving. It also makes it easier to launch. TaylorMade decided that this design element should be rotated to increase clubhead speed and reduce drag.
You can expect excellent all-round performance from these drivers. But, even before one hit, you will be in love.
