NFC (near-field communication) makes contactless payment easy and secure.

Apple and other companies rely on NFC for their Apple Pay technology. This allows iPhone users to make payments online with their Apple Wallet or at cash registers.

What about Apple Pay? Does USPS accept it? Here’s the answer: You may be surprised.

Does USPS Take Apple Pay In 2022? (You'll Be Surprised)

Does USPS Take Apple Pay In 2022?

As of 2022, the United States Postal Service has stopped accepting Apple Pay and other NFC payments online. Instead, customers are limited to more traditional forms of payment, like cash and credit cards. While current card readers can be used for NFC, USPS has deactivated that technology.

  • To learn some theories as to why USPS doesn’t accept Apple Pay, as well as what forms of payment they do accept, keep reading!
  • Why isn’t USPS accepting Apple Pay?

Although the USPS has not made any official statements about why Apple Pay isn’t accepted, there are theories among Redditors.

  • User u/rmiw commented that it wouldn’t surprise him if people had to go a lot harder to have it turn on than the rest if they were using their personal system.
  • USPS can access sensitive information from millions of Americans. The organization is also a federal service. This would mean that it has to adhere to strict regulations.

It could be the reason why post offices do not accept Near-Field Communication (NFC), such as Apple Pay.

  • U/johnthrives also commented that the credit cards machines of their customers are “so outdated …””.
  • This also checks out, as my local post office’s credit card machines, despite being outfitted for NFC and Apple Pay, processed basic debit card transactions incredibly slowly.

Given the requirements of high-speed machines, and the fact USPS falls under a federal system it is no surprise that Apple Pay is not accepted at USPS.

What Forms Of Payment Does USPS Take?

Even though there are no cutting-edge payment methods available, USPS will accept many other types of payments in their post offices. Here are some examples:

  • Cash that is good and old-fashioned
  • Visa, MasterCard (AmEx), AmEx and Discover are major credit/debitcard brands. Debit cards can get up to $50 in cashback, with increments of 10 dollars.
  • Carte Blanche
  • Diners Club
  • JCB
  • China Union Payment
  • Personal checks only (post office only)
  • This is one of the last places to accept personal checks. You may bring your checkbook if you:

  • Manufacturer prints your address and name on the check
  • You have a valid state-issued ID (the names must match)
  • Does USPS Take Samsung Pay?

Strangely, even though Apple Pay is not accepted at post offices, they accept Samsung Pay or Google Pay.

Customers have also reported seeing more current kiosks at their post offices. Samsung Pay customers who have one of these cards linked to their accounts and allowed to use it have seen their numbers increase.

While it appears that the vast majority of post offices do not offer contactless pay, some do.

Apple Pay is not yet accepted at these places. Samsung Phone users will be able to use Samsung Pay instead.

It seems like the Samsung Pay system is caught on guard by clerks.

One Redditor did comment that they had to enter their PIN and sign.

NFC can work but isn’t 100% “contactless”. You must use the pinpad or pen.

And another commenter ran into a bit of resistance when they successfully used contactless pay – the manager informed them it was against “company policy” to accept any smartphone payment method.

Maybe they didn’t turn NFC off at all?

Can You Pay USPS With PayPal?

USPS announced, in June 2012, that PayPal and PayPal would allow customers to pay online.

You can pay online using the Click-N-Ship USPS service.

This benefit is very popular as customers choose to use PayPal instead of their cards. PayPal, just like Apple Pay adds an extra layer security to transactions.

PayPal allows you to pay online without having to enter any financial data.

It was an easy way for customers to pay for goods or services, since many online store owners use PayPal.

  • Conclusion
  • USPS currently does not accept Apple Pay, but the company clearly has everything in place.

Along with accepting major credit/debit cards and Paypal (online), USPS appears to accept Samsung Pay in some of their post office locations.
