Safeway is not like other supermarkets and retailers. Safeway requires that their employees dress professionally.

Which Departments Have Safeway Dress Code Standards?

Safeway’s dress code for men and women requires certain grooming standards. So, they have separated their grooming standard list according to gender:
All male employees must have neatly-combed and clean hair. Ex. The temporary dye can leach from hair into foods. Towels and Hands: All hands must be washed and cleaned. Facial hair: All facial hair must be shaved. Beards, beatees and handlebar mustaches are prohibited for employees. Regular mustaches, however, are permitted. Safeway demands that all male employees maintain decent hygiene. In order to prevent unpleasant breath and body odor, employees are asked to refrain from biting nails, coughing and sneezing into their hands, and other unclean habits. Jewelry: All jewelry should be plain and professional looking. Neck chains should be worn inside the collar of a shirt in order to prevent a safety hazard. Piercings of the face are prohibited. Clothing: Your clothing must be properly ironed, pressed and kept in good order.

Hair: All female employees must have hair that is conservatively colored. It must be kept off the face of long-haired women to avoid any visual obstructions or possible food contact. For nails, hands and fingers: They must have a clear nail or a soft polish, such as nude, beige, or light pink. Job functionality must be maintained regardless of the length of fingers. Safeway demands that all female employees keep a good standard of hygiene. Employees are requested to avoid biting their nails, coughing, sneezing, or any other unsanitizing behavior, in order to keep unpleasant smells and body odor to a minimum. In order to keep a businesslike look, facial piercings of any kind are strictly forbidden. You should keep earrings small to reduce safety risks. Also, long necklaces cannot be worn above the collar.
Potential Safeway employees should note that since Safeway has not updated its dress code since 2008, some store locations may be more flexible with items worn for personal expression.
However, employees should not show up to Safeway out of the dress code unless they have discussed certain styles with their store manager (ex. piercings, multi-colored hair, etc).
Is Safeway allowing employees to wear leggings?
Safeway employees have to wear dark colored slacks/dress pants.
Skirts, as long as the fabric is professional (ex. no denim or cotton skirts).
