Costco Photo Printing

Costco no longer develops film. We contacted Costco customer service and several Costco stores and discovered that Costco stopped developing film in 2014. This means Costco also doesn’t develop disposable cameras.

You can, however, upload and order digital photos on Costco.com. Note that the retailer used to offer photo printing in stores, but it removed this service from its stores early in 2021.

You can find more details about Costco’s photo products and shipping costs on their website. Register with Costco Photo Center and get your print order.

Is Cvs able to scan my film?

Yes, CVS will scan your film when getting it developed and give digital scans back to you on CD in addition to 4×6 inch prints. The cost of these scans is included in the total price. They won’t scan films if the film was not developed.

Walgreens is another store to consider when you’re deciding where to develop film. Walgreens doesn’t develop film in house, unlike the other stores on this list. Instead, they send it to Fujifilm North America for development. The process may take from seven days up to several weeks. Despite the wait and expense, the quality of the prints are good and worth the wait.

Keep in mind that just like Walmart and CVS, Walgreens does not return the film negatives.

Pros:

  • There are many locations so you can be sure it’s near you
  • Can develop Disposable / Single-Use Cameras
  • Processing cost includes a CD and 4×6 inch color prints
  • Shorter wait time (7 – 10 days) than Walmart (2 – 3 weeks)
  • Low-resolution scans of decent quality but with acceptable resolution
  • Will call you when your order is complete

Cons:

  • Won’t get your negatives back
  • Very little, if any, customer service – drop film off in a paper envelope in the store
  • No online film developing ordering available
  • Other formats of film take 3 weeks to process (except 35mm).
  • Overall more expensive than Walmart and CVS, especially with film roll with 36 exposures
  • Prints are mediocre at best

While you’ll have to plan ahead now so you can ensure there’s enough time for your prints to be produced and shipped to you, not much has changed beyond that.

Those products will all still be their usual low prices, and they will retain their great Costco quality. All of their products will be available as they were when photo centers opened.

Costco clarified that holiday cards, calendars and photo books will still be available through their Costco Photo Center site, as well as other products.

Just remember that you’ll have to plan ahead to factor in shipping time, and now you’ll have to pay a shipping cost.

Also – if you edit your photos, you should turn off the auto-correct! It’s likely undoing many of your exposure edits. Read this post for instructions how to turn it off one time or forever.

What’s the deal with Costco?

Costco shut down all its photo centres in stores in February 2021.

Costco members were notified via email that they had identified the primary reason for the decline in demand after the advent of social media and camera phones.

However, you can access many of Costco’s photo services online.

Unfortunately, services such as film development and photo restoration are no longer available either in-store or online. Costco does not offer passport photo printing.

Shipping Estimates For Costco Prints And Products

Which brings us to… how much does it cost to ship photos to your home? I know we all LOVE free shipping, but with something as cheap as photos, it makes more sense for Costco to charge a small, flat amount for their printed products.

Here are the prices for Costco’s Standard Shipping.

Standard shipping takes up to seven days. However, if your order is urgent, many products can be shipped 2-days. It is important to note that shipping 2-day takes 4 days. This time extends beyond their normal production times.

Costco will ship small prints free of charge if they are standard shipping. You will need to pay more if you require overnight shipping or 2 day delivery.

Shipping Cost for larger prints: For Photos sized 11×14, 12×12, 12×18, 16×20, and 20×30, Costco charges $4 for standard shipping.

You can buy canvases, blankets, metallic prints and acrylic prints for $5.99 each.

Calendars, photo books, photo plaques, and mugs ship for only $5.99 each and 99 cents for any extras.

Not feeling loyal to Costco? that’s fine. There are tons of other websites that offer high-quality photo printing for wall prints, photo books, other products.

If price is your main concern, go straight to this post for the cheapest places to print photos.

Here are some of my favorite options for prints and other products:

Mpix is an extremely popular online printer with tons of great reviews. It’s the consumer side to a pro lab, so they know their stuff! Mpix prints are of exceptional quality and many photographers have used them. Prints start at just 24 cents per print, making them affordable. They also have tons of sizes, finishes, and colors.

Mixbook: This is one of my favorite consumer printers for photo products. They also offer regular printing and photo books that have lay-flat pages.

Amazon Prime Photos is another perk. Amazon has the ability to print books and make them for you, plus they will ship free of charge (! for Prime members.

Chatbooks: This is the place to go if you are looking for simple and quick photobooks. Upload from your smartphone, laptop, or other social media. Import captions or leave them off. Two sizes: softcover and hardcover. Chatbooks are covered in detail here.

Snapfish – Snapfish is one of the cheapest printing options. You can choose from matte or glossy finishes on most sizes of prints, and they ship directly to your house.

Products For Digitizing Film At Home:

KODAK Mobile Film Scanning: The Kodak scanner allows you to scan 35mm slides and color film using the app and then save the images to your phone. It uses an LED light to reveal images on your negative so you can capture and edit. The device can also be folded down to make it easy for storage and travel. At around $34.99, it will save you a lot of money in the long run by allowing you to scan images yourself.

Rybozen Mobil Film and Slide Scanner: This product allows you to use your phone to scan old 35mm color and black & white film and digitize it into your phone. This user-friendly application scans the image through LED lights. The kit also provides a stand for the phone to sit on so that the photo is captured correctly every time. This product is easy to use and folds up for future uses. At around $29.99, it will scan limitless photos for the same price it costs to develop 40 exposures.

DIGITNOW 22MP All-In-One Scanner: This product allows you to see your 35mm color and black and white negatives without the hassle of an app or computer to process the film. It is hand-held and can scan and digitize your negatives with 22/16 resolution to your computer and/or phone as desired. You can scan black-and-white and color photographs one at a time. This scanner is great for “middle ground”, as it costs only $79.99

Magnasonic All in-one 22MP scanner: This is a great option if you don’t want to use a smartphone or an app to take photos. The scanner reads 35mm film and then saves it to your device or SD card. The scanner can store up to 128GB data. Not only does it save your photos to the device(s), but it will show you the photos during and after development on a screen attached to the device. These photos are easily transferable to your computer with a resolution of up to 22 megapixels. This product is more on the expensive end–the initial starting cost being around $119.99.

Epson Perfection V600 Flatbed Scanner. This scanner is highly regarded by the film community. The scanner can scan all sizes of film, including large format negatives and 35mm negatives. It costs $242.49. Digital ICE is a dust- and scratch-removing technology that can be used to scan film, prints, and photographs at a resolution 6400 x 9600 dpi. Keep in mind the scanner may not be compatible with newer macs and it can be slow. However, it is less than half the price of scanners that are less capable from scanning film.

The Costco Photo Center offers services like…

  • Photos and videos from digitally digitized homes

Not Receiving Your Negatives With Your Scans

It is common for negatives to be thrown away after the scan has finished, as most drugstores do not produce film in-house.

I’ve even had the unfortunate instance of a drugstore sending me the wrong person’s photos, which, aside from being a huge privacy concern, meant that it was impossible for me to ever get my photos. They discarded the negatives and scanned them, so there wasn’t much they could do. I was offered a refund but that didn’t compensate for the valuable photos they sent me.

Does Walmart Develop Disposable Cameras?

Yes, Walmart develops disposable or single-use cameras. You can drop them off at any Walmart Photo lab or mail them in if you don’t have a store nearby. There is an extra processing fee for developing disposable cameras. In addition, the turnaround time to process your film will vary depending on how busy the lab is.

Use the Walmart store locator on its website or app to find film-developing locations in your area. Just enter your zip code, and a list of all the stores in your area will pop up.

Contact their customer service to find out if your local Walmart offers disposable camera production.

See our guide on making copies and printing documents at Walmart.

What is the time it takes Walmart to develop film?

From the time the 35mm film was dropped at the store, to the moment you are able to pick up prints and negatives takes about six days. Walmart processes 35mm film using a third party service. Development times will vary depending on the type of service selected and how large or small your negatives and prints are.

Films such as APS 110, disk and 126 color prints film take longer because they need to be scanned, printed on photo paper, or burnt onto a CD. The process usually takes two to three weeks from the time you drop your film at the shop for these types of films.

Keep in mind that since Walmart is such a large retailer, it sometimes suffers from longer-than-average wait times during peak season. So if you’re in a hurry to get your photos back, try going earlier in the week or on off-peak hours.

At Home Film Scanning & Development

Film development can be costly and you may not have access to any film makers nearby. If this is the case, you may need to consider developing your own film. Depending on the process or type of film you develop, the process can be easy or may require a bit of practice.

Also, there are digitizing kits available that make scanning your film after processing at home fairly easy using equipment you already have. However, these kits cannot do medium format or large format negatives, so you may need to consider purchasing a scanner for these film formats. I recommend the Epson v600 scanner on Amazon.com for scanning negatives larger than 35mm.

Where Can I Get 1 Hour Photos? You Can Print Your Photos In Local Places

Many other large-box stores offer “1-hour prints”, and some of these are dirt-cheap. Many offer 8×10 print coupons that can be used to get free occasion coupons!

The employees who work with photo printing machines are not trained as technicians or photographers. You won’t be able to troubleshoot issues like white balance, verify the colors of your photos, or check the black levels on the printer.

If you don’t know what those terms mean, you need a good photo printer helping you. They are trained to understand the technicalities and lingo that will make your prints stand out.
