The Shootout Results Although the work doesn’t slow down in Florida at this time of year, the OPE professionals who assess living tools were able to compare 10 of the most popular string trimmer models against one another. The goal was to determine which tool had the highest efficiency, value, functionality, and runtime.

Performance Control Referring to the tradeoff: 24 oz. Fuel can be stored for a long time. You will save time and money by not making as many trips to your truck for fuel refills. The Stihl FS 91R tool can last for just under an hour with a full tank before it needs to be refueled.

The FS 91R tool was not the best-performing model, but it did have the lowest fuel consumption. An initial reliability test, whereby we ran 8 oz of fuel through each model, showed that most of our string trimmers could run longer on the same amount of fuel. The Stihl FS 91 R finished here in 7th place.

So, whatever it’s worth, you’ll have to pause less often for refueling, but you don’t get the best fuel economy. The Stihl FS 91 R has a 4-stroke engine but still requires premix fuel. We wish this wasn’t the case, but sometimes it’s life. Anyway, we used TruFuel 50:1 Premix fuel to keep things running optimally.

The Competition

As an entry-level battery-powered string trimmer the FSA 56 has plenty of competition. After looking around for a good comparison product we settled on the Husqvarna 115iL.

This is a great entry-level string trimmer and, spoiler alert, it’s the only competitor in this article that we believe might actually edge out its STIHL competition.

This Husqvarna trimmer uses a 36-volt battery, just like the FSA 56 and it you’ll get a similar amount of run time on one charge – usually somewhere between 35 and 45 minutes. There is not much between them. Where this machine edges out the FSA 56 is in cutting width. The machine cuts almost 14 inches of path.

Both trimmers are good products, with a quality reputation. Husqvarna as well as STIHL stand behind the machines and offer industry-leading warranties. They have excellent customer support teams available to customers when they need them.

You can’t choose one or the other when there is so much to choose from. We had to choose a winner so we chose the Husqvarna115iL. It really came down to its slight larger cutting deck.

Stihl Fsa 56

A cordless, battery-powered trimmer with battery is the ideal choice if you are looking for a more environmentally friendly option while working outdoors.

STIHL offers many great choices for green gardeners. In our STIHL battery string trimmer reviews you won’t find better value for the money than the FSA 56.

The FSA 56 weighs slightly less than 8 pounds with the battery attached and it has a familiar straight shaft design.

The main drawback of the AK20 trimmer is the 40 minute runtime. This is if your battery is fully charged. It’s also hurt by the fact that the cutting area is only about 11 inches. It’s great for small yards or quick tasks.

We also like the FSA 56’s quietness. You won’t have to worry about waking of the family or the neighbors if you decide you want to do a little trimming early on a Saturday morning. This battery-powered trimmer is quieter than an electric one, and doesn’t require any cords.

The battery in this model is 36-volt and provides plenty of power to do the job. Although the charge doesn’t last an extremely long time, you will be able to use it normally up until the charge runs out. There’s no noticeable difference in power output between the first minute of use and the twenty-eighth minute.

The housing for the motor is lightweight, as well as impact and corrosion resistant. This machine is easy to start. No cords to pull and no worries about throwing your shoulder out in the process. Once the battery has fully charged, you can simply push the start button.

A good, battery-powered string trimmer is the FSA 56. It’s ideal for small yards. This may not work well if you do a lot with trimming. It is somewhat limited at 40 minutes.

And this trimmer looks comfortable enough: it has tools like the rubberized handles, an easy-to-access throttle, and a suitably long shaft that won’t drive too many people around the yard.

This model is a compromise for Stihl. It has the largest tank of all of the models we tested at 24 oz, but with a full gas tank, that kind of fuel size adds a lot of weight. The trimmer is 12.1 pounds with an empty tank. However, it will almost be 14 pounds when you start your day.

Ear FS91R weighed in at 106 and 50 feet 80 respectively. The loudest model we tested, this string trimmer will benefit from a better muffler. It may not be an issue for pros, but many would put on hearing protection.

Stihl Fsa 45

If you have one thing to say about STIHL products, it is that they do a great job of the tasks they are designed for. The FSA 45 battery-powered string trimmer is no exception. This little machine is efficient and cuts through weeds no problem.

The issue we have with this model is the miniscule amount of run time you get when operating it. It won’t take you more than 20 minutes to complete your work, which will make it a no-brainer for many.

This trimmer is light, which is a plus. It weighs only 5.1 pounds and that makes it very easy to handle for almost anyone. At just 9 inches, the cutting width of this trimmer is quite small. This trimmer can be used for smaller yards and small finishing projects.

This trimmer gives you cordless freedom, and clean conscience. This trimmer emits very low emissions and makes little noise. Your neighbors will be grateful as well. The STIHL adjustable shaft is included for your comfort. Additionally, the handle loop can be adjusted to 360°.

The STIHL FSA 45 battery-operated trimmer is designed for small jobs. It’s ideal for small yards with only a handful of areas to be trimmed. You don’t have to worry about emissions and the cordless system is completely dust-free. It’s a smart idea for anyone who has a big yard to consider a different STIHL product. This one is not right for you.

Performance

Performance is the place where the rubber meets the road. A feature-rich string trimmer that struggles with actual trimming doesn’t do anyone a whole lot of good. We fitted our string trimmers all with the 0.095 Echo Black Diamond Trimmer line, then we went out in thickest Florida grass: Bahia.

In 13.5 seconds, the Stihl FS 91R mowed through a 5-foot x 5-foot square of tough grass. The fastest model that we tested did the same feat was just 11 seconds.

These trimmers were also used to cut a smaller, less common patch of grass. The FS 91 R completed this task in less than 9 seconds. This task was completed by our fastest high-torque model in less than 8 seconds.

The differences between most of the models we tested were negligible. That said, in overall performance, the Stihl FS 91 R finished 5th.

Fuel Efficiency

Referring back to that tradeoff, here’s the good news: 24 oz. You should have plenty of fuel to last for quite a while. You will save time and money by not making as many trips to the truck to refill your tank. The Stihl FS 91 R can last just under an hour with a full tank before it needs to be refueled.

The FS 91 R wasn’t the most efficient model in terms of fuel consumption. We ran each string trimmer through 8 ounces of fuel. This proved that the majority of them could operate for longer periods of time on the same fuel. Here, the Stihl FS 91R finished 7th. So, for whatever it’s worth, you’ll have to stop less often for refueling, but you’re not getting the best fuel economy with this model.

It also bears mentioning that, while the Stihl FS 91 R does feature a 4-stroke engine, it still requires premix fuel. Although we wish it wasn’t, such is sometimes life. Anyway, for our shootout, we used TruFuel 50:1 Premix fuel to keep things running optimally.

Stihl Fs 56 Rc-E

An entry-level trimmer may be fine for a homeowner with a small yard, but if you’ve just purchased a couple of acres in the country, you’ll need something a little more robust. The FS 56 RC-E is a great choice.

This trimmer has a straight shaft design which makes it easier to reach into confined spaces and it’s long enough to extend your reach considerably.

This is a pretty powerful trimmer with a 0.8kW gas powered engine. The trimmer also has a 16.5 inch cutting surface so you can make fewer passes.

These features do make it a little larger than the entry-level models though – it does weigh in at about 10.6 lbs. This can make it difficult to carry around so they have included a strap for support.

Compared to professional trimmers the FS 56 RC-E is still relatively lightweight. You can work comfortably for several hours if you use it with the support strap. If you have a couple of acres to trim that’s a good thing!

This trimmer, like other STIHL gas-powered trimmers, starts almost every pull. STIHL takes the quality of their products seriously and that’s evident with this trimmer.

The handle is fully adjustable for the comfort of the user and it can be rotated as well. The drive shaft also has built-in vibration protection which also makes it more comfortable to use.

To protect the choke lever from any damage, it is protected by a protective cover. It’s little details like these that separate this and other STIHL products from its competitors. It’s even equipped with a throttle trigger interlock that has to be engaged before the trigger can be activated. They might not have thought of everything, but they’ve come close.

The FS 56 RC-E STIHL grass cutter is a top-rated model. This device is a cross-platform tool that does the work for homeowners as well as professionals. Although the weight is a little too heavy for some, the support strap makes up for it. Although it is powered by gas, there will be some carbon emissions. However, the footprint of this model is small.

Value

As far as value goes, Stihl does some pretty commendable work with this model. This model not only offers some of our favorite features and runs times, but also has a 2-year limited warranty. The Stihl FS 91R retails at $299 and is less expensive than most of the other models. This is not something we are used to with Stihl brands, which tend to be more expensive. In this instance, however, the Ryobi or Troy-Bilt models are more expensive. The Stihl FS 91 R is a solid choice because of its performance, warranty and price.

The 91r and 91r have one thing in common. The long handles are on the 91, not on the other one. This is a great safety feature. If you lose the throttle control, it can be pushed down to turn it on. Another thing that I like about this bike is that there is a throttle control but no exposed cable.

I would not have to worry about my throttle cable breaking or getting in any way hurt. The choke (which controls how much air goes into your engine) has a similar design as well as protection for when you are adjusting its position by pushing in and holding for release when the 91 and the 91r are both snowmobiles.

It’s a Professional Series trimmer. The trimmer weighs in at 12.1 pounds and is very easy to use. This handle is amazing! You can adjust it to make yourself more comfortable if you have long arms like a gorilla or if you have short arms, bring this back so your arms are not too far away from each other.

This string trimmer is made for people who do landscaping. It weighs 12.1 pounds which is easy to use. The handle can be adjusted by loosening the screws and moving it in or out depending on how tall you are or what feels right to you. Some people never think about adjusting their equipment but it makes them more comfortable. This review gives you an idea of the chainsaw.

The Competition

Finding a rival to the FS 240 was difficult. It really doesn’t have any. Craftsman WS405 was our closest runner-up, but it doesn’t compare. Although it’s a high-quality product that offers tons of amazing features, the FS 240 is still the best.

The Craftsman trimmer has some additional quality features. For example, it does have easy start technology that allows you to start the machine without having to pull a cord. The FS 240 also has the same features.

It is lacking in cutting power and raw power. The FS 240 has an unmatched 173cc engine – the Craftsman trimmer lags far behind at 29cc’s. STIHL could include a 22 inch cutting board with the additional horsepower without compromising performance. The Craftsmen trimmer only offers a 17-inch cutting deck.

It’s not a close race. The FS 240 trimmer is clear superior to the WS405. Both are good trimmers – it’s just that the STIHL trimmer has a lot more cutting power. This machine is the one you have been searching for if you are looking to cut through weeds effortlessly.

Sometimes you need something with a little more power. A prime example is someone who’s moved from a house with a small yard to one with a few acres. It may also be because you’re a professional landscaper.

Whatever the reason is that you need a string trimmer that can handle a lot of hard work the FS 240 from STIHL has you covered.

This trimmer was specifically made by STIHL for professionals. It comes with a 5-year warranty which is virtually unheard of for lawn equipment.

The cutting deck on this machine is an impressive 22 inches and it has a powerful 173cc engine. As you might expect with all that power, it does weigh a little more than standard trimmers.

It weighs 15.2 lbs. The FS 240 has a 2-handled bicycle handle that is easier to use. The FS 240 comes with a helmet and a harness. It’s easy to use, thanks to the two-handled design and harness.

For the environmentally conscious consumer this one may pose a bit of a problem. The powerful engine of the FS 240 emits a lot of smoke and makes a lot noise.

You should not be using the trimmer if you are in large properties’ back halves. However, you might want to use the trimmer only if you have children around.

The trimmer comes with all the same standard features as other STIHL models, such as the ability to turn on at the first pull. The gas tank is a decent size at 25 ounces, but you may have to fill it a couple of times for large jobs. This is normal for all gas-powered trimmers.

This is an impressive machine with a 40-volt battery for extra power. The machine cuts 13 inches, which is comparable to FSA90 R.

This one is good for battery life. It will last somewhere between 45 minutes to an hour depending on how you use it. This is a better option than many battery-powered trimmers but not as good as the FSA90 R, which can go up to 2hrs with an upgraded battery.

The Kobalt KST 130X is a good machine with some clear advantages over its competitors. This trimmer is powerful and can cut a cutting path of 13 inches. Its battery life is where it fails. You’ll get a decent amount of running time with this model, but it doesn’t come close to the FSA 90 R’s potential to go for up to 2 hours.

I have been using the Steel FS 91 for about two months. This trimmer is great. This trimmer has many advantages. This trimmer is easy to start and idles well, perfect for me. The different speeds are also good because some parts that I trim may happen less often than others, but this trimmer has a speed just right for both types of work.
