Best Stihl Chainsaw Chain

Stihl is a chainsaw manufacturer which produces its own saw chains and guide bars. The company has a Waiblingen facility for making guide bars and a Virginia Beach campus covering 83 acres (where additional products are also made). The company also makes saw chains in Switzerland. Longer Stihl Rollomatic E Super Guide Bars feature an angled oil delivery hole that improves oil flow to the saw chain. All Stihl chains are pre-stretched before they leave the factory.

We can’t really recommend a single chain for everyone. You have too many variables depending upon your goals. Stihl has over a dozen different chain types if that’s any indication of how many options you have. The Stihl Rapid Micro Comfort 3 is our favorite. This combination of low chatter, reduced kickback and smooth cutting with low vibration is what the Rapid Micro Comfort 3 chain does. Pico Duro’s Pico Duro Chain features carbide-tipped technology, which makes it sharper for longer.

If you need more speed, but less teeth to sharpen, then you might consider one of the Rapid Micro skip-tooth blades. This is our preferred chain for basic tree felling.

Stihl Msa 200 C-Bq

If you are looking for a battery-powered chainsaw, the MSA200 C-BQ is a good choice. A gas saw of similar power can’t match this saw’s power, but it is quieter and doesn’t require gasoline. This saw is not recommended for large projects. This model can cut only 14 inches with this machine. Nonetheless, it can help you clear out storm debris around your home since it’s lightweight and safe.

When a standard battery is installed in it, the saw weighs just 11 pounds. There may be slight weight changes when the battery is upgraded to a longer-lasting or larger one. Battery life is approximately 15 minutes when fully charged. A battery that lasts more than two and a half hours can be purchased if you need more time.

With a battery-powered saw, you can also avoid breathing in toxic exhaust fumes as you would with a gas saw. A shutoff function automatically stops the saw if it is taken from you when your hand is removed, and a cordless start means there are no dangers of accidents.

This saw is great for cutting firewood and it’s much stronger than the old Stihls 028 and 026. The 036 is great for cutting logs and trees of smaller width.

Stihl Ms 391

This tank-like MS 391 offers Prius fuel efficiency and emissions ratings. I would not recommend using this saw to trim limbs. This is the saw for cutting oaks. You can take it into the woods with you!

Because of its 64cc engine, it can handle trees up to 20” in diameter. As for fuel capacity, it is the same as that of the 362 C-M. You can work for long periods without needing to refuel. Because of the low emission engine, it is very eco-friendly. When compared to other models, it is one of the best Stihl chainsaws has ever made. However, its filtration system is what makes it so impressive.

The MS 391 doesn’t just have a fan that filters the air. Large particles are sucked out of the air by the use of centrifugal force. So you won’t have to replace your air filters as often, and you can cut through trees and logs without worry about clogged filters.

Stihl Msa 140 C-Bq

Stihl’s MSA 140 C-BQ chainsaw is rated highly in several Stihl chainsaw reviews since it has an unexpected power for its tiny size at 8.19 pounds.

This tool is very effective in climbing, pruning, and cutting wood. This chainsaw has guide bars only 10-14 inches wide so that it will take only handlebars up to 12 inches tall. This is not the right choice for removing large hardwood trees.

It is quieter than gas-powered units thanks to the 36V battery. The battery drains faster if you have to cut through thicker trunks. On a full charge, you can use the MSA 140 C-BQ for about 45 minutes.

If you purchase the Stihl MSA140 C-BQ as a standalone device, the charger and battery must be purchased separately. Due to the lower durability of the Stihl MSA 140 C-BQ, you may have to sharpen it more often or replace it more often than other chains.

Balance

Although comfort and feeling of tools are subjective, there is no denying that certain designs perform better than others. Both experienced homeowners and professionals can tell the difference. I believe that thoughtful design intention and execution do come through for the majority of users.

The best Stihl chainsaws feel balanced in your hands. The saws should be straight and not twist. Neither your back or front grip should feel stressed while making cuts. You want to be able to easily rock the saw forward and back on the bucking spikes when cutting through larger trunks.

Holding a saw with your left hand on the front handle in front of you should have the saw balancing fairly flat. Being a bit front-heavy is okay, but a rear-heavy saw lifts the cutting end of the saw up towards you and requires more effort and vigilance to use and carry safely.

Stihl Mse 250 C-Q

The MS 250 C-Q is the only electric chainsaw I’ll be reviewing. This saw was made to be used in professional areas, where noise and exhaust fumes are unacceptable.

You can use the 250 C-Q to cut diameters from 16 inches up to 20 inches. That’s comparable to the other large saws I’ve reviewed, but it’s a bit limited due to its power source.

It is lightweight for its size, though. It doesn’t require nearly as many internal parts as a gas saw, and that makes it more comfortable to hold.

You can stop the chain immediately in a second with the proven STIHL Quickstop(r) chain brake system. This minimizes injury risk in situations of emergency and kickback.

The quietness of this saw is what I love most. It can cause problems if you live in noisy areas or in small cities. It runs silently and shouldn’t be a problem for your neighbours.

Stihl Chainsaws: Where are they Made?

If you’re looking for a high-quality tool, you’ll be happy to know that the vast majority of Stihl chainsaws are put together in Virginia Beach USA with mostly domestic parts.

These chainsaws are not made at the best German manufacturing facilities. The most notable of the German-made chainsaws are the MS 201 and the MS 441.

The carburetors will likely come from Stihl’s Chinese production plants. But don’t be concerned about their quality. Stihl bought those plants and holds the products they produce to high standards.

Stihl’s top-quality chains are all made in Switzerland.

Stihl Ms 170

The MS 170 is highly recommended for entry-level users. This is the most recommended Stihl home-use chainsaw. This is a small and easy-to-use chainsaw that’s also very capable.

Let’s look into the capabilities of the saw. The guide chain and bar can cut trees between 12 and 16 inches across. Although the cutting length is not very large, it can be used to cut trees and clear debris from storms. Although it is limited in functionality, the machine can handle larger jobs after you become more familiar with it.

It is also very lightweight because of its small size. People can easily use it due to its lightweight design. This machine starts very quickly as well! The MS 170 typically starts up in less than three pulls, compared to other saws that might require 1 to 2 dozen pulls of the ignition line to get them to light.

Stihl Ms 362 Cm

The MS 362 is an upgraded version of Stihl’s basic chainsaw. This is the most cost-effective Stihl model. It runs at top performance thanks to its microprocessor-controlled engine.

The saw has a cutting length of approximately 3.5 meters, which is enough for most tasks. The motor has a capacity of 4.69 BHP, so cutting through hardwood is no problem at all. The chainsaw is capable of cutting through wood up to 25 inches in diameter.

If we’re talking about features, the microprocessor is the most impressive. When the engine runs, the processor automatically adjusts to the cutting conditions by making adjustments as the engine runs. In other words, regardless of wood density or temperature, the MS 362 C-M will maintain its cutting performance.

It’S Automatic

First, I am not an arborist nor logger. I’m a pro woodworker and carpenter who customizes sentimental trees for customers and turns them into furniture, built-ins, mantels, and other custom parts. To do this job, I will need an 880 or a 661. Yes, if I were milling bigger diameters. However, the largest tree that I am capable of managing by myself is between 24 and 25 inches in circumference. A few customers of my dealer do custom milling using their chainsaws so they were able to assist me in setting up. I used to make smaller logs (~16” in diameter) with my MS251 and Granberg Alaskan Small Log Mill. Now the 251 is mainly for bucking duties, while the Stihl MS362 is for milling. I’ve got a 24” Alaskan Mill for the 362. For the 362, I use mostly Stihl yellow chains with modified file angles. However, a real ripping ripping chain is better. Although the ripping chain is faster and more efficient, I want to point out that milling can be accomplished with yellow or green chains. I’ve been doing it this way for years. Chainsaw Cutting Power

Although the size of the motor is a significant factor in determining the saw’s power, it really does matter to test the machine. These recommendations are based on either our personal experience with these saws, or professional feedback.

We also see power helped by smart systems that monitor fuel/oxygen levels and keep saws running strong even when filters get clogged from use. For this reason, some 55cc saws can outperform other brands with larger engines once the work gets underway.

Combining real-world cutting with controlled situation cutting is a great way to put a saw through its paces.

Chain Brake And Other Safety Features

A chain brake that is easy to use and works well is what we want. This is something that most manufacturers know well. We have not encountered any problems. Most extend high enough to offer easy activation during a kickback event.

We want a safety trigger lock that’s easy to use without getting in the way. Stihl and Husqvarna put theirs on top of the handle. They work great, until they stop working. We are mainly focusing on the feel and placement of the saw. This ensures that we do not have to shift our hands from their natural positions when using the saw. Echo has the most easily to replace trigger locks. We aren’t sure if this is a positive or negative sign.

We also check the chain catch pin and position of the handguards–but most manufacturers have this down to a science.

Ease Of Filling Matters

Since we add a lot of oil to our Stihl chainsaws, the size of the oil reservoir and the ease of adding new oil matter. This makes it much simpler to do a routine task. We don’t like having oily fingers, so being able to fill the tank while leaving our work gloves on is our preference. You should look for oil caps that can be turned with your gloves or flip-up tabs to provide a better grip.

Use Matching Chains to Reduce Bias

To ensure that we don’t get biased when testing chainsaws head-to-head, we compare all the saws with different chains. You’ll find the same differences in your own use depending upon what type of chain you choose. Why the Stihl MS362 C-M?

I stopped in my local service dealer, C&S Supply in Mankato, MN, to determine which one saw to get. After addressing my needs with them, I was helped to come to a conclusion on the Stihl MS362 for a few reasons. The main explanation is M-Tronic. One less thing to think about is to automatically change the carb for changing fuel and air conditions. There is no primer bulb, there are no high, low or idle change screws either. It’s all taken care of by a microprocessor-controlled solenoid. I’ve been fine with my cars automatically changing for years to come. I love seeing the technology trickle down to small engines, too. Talking to my supplier, they’ve only seen one M-Tronic device ever come back because of carb problems, and that’s when the technology was first implemented.

No adjustment screws needed with M-Tronic

The second explanation was the ratio of power to weight. This saw has one of the greatest weight capacity in the Stihl lineup. The case is made of magnesium which helps to shave the weight of the powerhead down to 12.35 lbs. Coupled with the 362 high-compression 4.69 hp engine, the saw has about.38 hp/lb. It doesn’t sound like much when you remember that other ~60 cc saws like the 391 are heavier and less powerful (.32 hp/lb). Lower Line Right now, I’ve got some drying boards that are 20′′ broad. Pre-Separation Air Filtration System This time-saving technology improves the performance of the engine filter system by doubling the time between air filter cleaning. Air drawn into the engine is first divided by centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before heading to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be collected by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance. Side-Access Chain Tensioner The Side-Access Chain Tensioner makes it much more comfortable for the user to change the chain of saws with a bar wrench as opposed to the usual position of the guide bar adjustment screw.
