Taylormade Sim Max Driver Review

TaylorMade SIM MAX is a forgiveness-focused driver. It has an 8 percent bigger face and 20 grams back weight.

This is a specially designed product for golfers who desire more forgiveness. The additional 20-gram weight is adjusted at the extreme rear of the club using the inertia generator.

An additional weight track is located at the back of the club to increase the moment of inertia. The increased M.O.I. This increases forgiveness and boosts launch.

Let’s first look at the history of the TaylorMade SIM MAX Driver, as well as what the SIM family (or TaylorMade SIM drivers) is.

Histories

TaylorMade researchers have been studying the relationship between handicaps, ball impacts and locations of the faces. They created a SIM driver family that caters to handicaps’ requirements based on this data.

SIM MAX-D, SIM MAX and SIM driver make up the SIM driver family. One thing that distinguishes the SIM driver family members from each other is their faces.

The SIM is the smallest in size, which is for good players with less handicap. The SIM MAX drivers (8%) and SIM MAX D (18%) are the opposite. They cater to different handicap levels and golfers’ needs.

The TaylorMade engineers worked on the material for its previous M series drivers, and they perfected the material. With the knowledge of the perfect material in hand, they could work on the driver’s shape’s geometry to achieve the best results.

They branded the aerodynamically improved shape as the “Shape in Motion” concept. Shape in Motion was designed to minimize drag, while the golfer experienced maximum drag.

Engineers were therefore able to achieve greater speed, and thus more mileage from SIM driver. Here is an overview of the TaylorMade SIM driver and SIM Max driver.

Taylormade Sim Vs Taylormade M6 Driver Review & Specs 2022

Taylormade drivers are seen frequently on the PGA Tour. Pros from Dustin Johnson to Tommy Fleetwood have used their drivers at one point or another. In fact, the M5 and M6 drivers were very common on the PGA Tour just a couple of years ago.

The M6 Driver was built for speed and distance, if you touch the ball with the twisted metal face, you know it’s going to fly and it’s also very forgiving and comes in a draw version as well for anyone with a slice. Sim is the most popular M Series upgrade. The Sim range has a great distance, but it is also easier to handle. It also comes in the Max Version for forgiveness and a Draw Bias Version. If you are on a budget the M6 is available now at a bargain price.

But now we are seeing pros pull out Taylormade Sim drivers more frequently. So what does the Sim series offer that the M series doesn’t? Are there any differences between them? Continue reading to learn more.

Callaway Mavrik Max

The Callaway Mavrik Max comes in roughly at the same cost as the TaylorMade SIM Max. It is another excellent example of the perfect blending performance and forgiveness. The Max is draw-biased and has a deep CG and a big, low-spin face. This will allow you to achieve beautiful, seamless drawing drives.

Thanks to two movable weights, the Mavrik Max offers quite a bit more adjustability than the SIM Max. Callaway also tried to improve aerodynamics using this driver. However, they took a different approach with TaylorMade. However, the results are quite similar.

Taylormade Sim2 Max D Driver

We’ll keep the theme going and let’s get to the numbers. TaylorMade’s SIM2 MAX D has allowed TaylorMade to increase both face size and MOI by nine percent. Just one number. It was simple.

TaylorMade’s redesign of the inertia Generator (the protrusion that runs the length the sole) has resulted in a shift of backweight towards the heel. This is the bigger story for slicers. Coupled with the internal weighting, that should make the driver a bit easier to turn over and should ultimately produce a more pronounced draw effect.

How much more?

SIM2 MAXD was an intriguing candidate for 2020 Most Wanted Testing. We didn’t find much that would suggest a significant draw bias. What we did see was a slight draw bias coupled with exceptional playability (long and straight) that put MAX D among the very best in the test.

At the time, I described it as an awesome choice for golfers with a little bit of or occasional slice. I suspect the TaylorMade SIM MAX D will be a bit more aggressive with slice correction than the previous model but as with other aspects of the SIM2 lineup, I’d wager it will shake out at a level that aligns with the TaylorMade identity.

SIM2 MAXD is available in 9 degrees, 10 and 12 degrees. The stock shaft offerings include the Fujikura Air Speeder.

The stock grip is Golf Pride’s Z-Grip.

Retail price for all three TaylorMade SIM2 driver models is $529.99

Taylormade Sim Vs Sim Max Price

Cost and value for money are always something that should always be considered. You have to ask yourself, “for the money am I getting that much more worth out of any extra features”?

The SIM is ever so slightly more expensive than the SIM Max. And it indeed has a couple of extra features. You decide if this is worth the extra cost. If you enjoy tinkering with your clubs and value maximum customization, then the extra cost will be worth it! If customization isn’t a priority, the SIM Max will be a welcome addition to your bag.

The SIM Max costs less than the SIM, if you look at the numbers.

Features And Benefits

Asymmetrical Weighted Sole

TaylorMade has become well-versed in the weight-saving abilities of carbon-fiber at this stage. They continued to improve and innovate throughout their M series. They eventually implemented the Twist Face technology and Speed Injection. Their focus now shifts to geometry, a topic often forgotten.

SIM stands for Shape in Motion and is an idea that aims to improve aerodynamics throughout the swing, focusing on the area where drivers feel the greatest drag. They came up with the solution after extensive research and some 3D technology.

The same sole was used for the M6 but they placed it slightly at an angle to make it more symmetrical. TaylorMade claims that this sole is more suited to the natural swing of a swing. Most drivers focus only on straight lines.

This is a complex design that will only make an impact at the top level. Although we did notice a slight increase in our swing speed, it could just have been a placebo effect.

Perhaps more importantly, this weighted sole provides a low CG, with the majority of the weight placed right at the rear of the head, providing higher launch conditions and aiding in forgiveness.

Speed Injected Twist Face

The Speed Injected Twist Face technology, which was used in the TaylorMade M models before it is being retired, returns to push driver faces towards their maximum ball speed. It was a success the last time, and by its very nature, it legally can’t be optimised any further.

No doubt about it, this face is capable of generating some serious ball speeds, even on off-center hits. However, this technology is about more than just speed; the face has been ‘twisted’ to reinforce the parts of the face which typically play lousy shots, creating a highly forgiving driver. It might not be brand new, but this is a great piece of tech that’s always a joy to play with.

It’s also worth noting that the face of the SIM Max is 8% larger than that of the SIM; it’s clear that this driver has been designed to provide maximum forgiveness.

New Cosmetics

It seems that TaylorMade have been doing some research in the cosmetics department as well as the performance optimization department. Though the looks of the SIM Max are somewhat related to those of the M models, they have, for all intents and purposes, received a bit of a makeover.

The bottom of the head looks great, sure, but the top is where the real magic happens. The silver strip alongside the TaylorMade logo works as an effective alignment tool, while the grey-tinged, chalky, chrome carbon fiber crown provides a very sleek appearance. This is the perfect way to impress your players.

Big Hitters And Low Handicappers

If you are hitting the ball a long way or are looking to up your game, then the SIM could be ideal. This is why we say it.

First, the launch angles are lower, and if you want to impart enough spin to get the ball genuinely flying, you will have to really be able to hit it hard. This is exacerbated by the fact that sidespin can be more prominent at lower launch angles. It is something beginners might have to deal with, but not for consistent strikers.

This is because of the sliding weight technology. OK, we all want to hit a slight draw or to be able to blend out that subtle fade. Most beginners prefer to hit the straight shot. Draw and fade are both trajectory characteristics that are mainly focused on by those who can already control the trajectory.

SIM Max is not as flexible as SIM Max. The SIM Max’s benefits aren’t as generous as SIM Max. You will be able to reap the advantages of SIM Max if you know how.

Taylormade Golf M6 D-Type Driver (460Cc)

The TaylorMade Golf M6 D-Type Driver (460cc) is designed to provide accurate and straighter shots and easily adds a few yards to your drives. The M6 D-Type is an option to the M6 with a mid-launch and mid-spin profile.

It does have all of the TaylorMade buzzworthy tech, such as the Inertia Generator and Hammerhead slots (create a huge sweet spot) and Speed Injected Twist face. All of these work together to help you when you’re struggling to hit the center of the driver face.

How is the M6 D-Type different from the M5 and M6 drivers?

Similar to the standard M6, the M6 D-Type doesn’t provide exceptional feedback. This is not necessarily a problem. This driver is specifically designed to be more forgiving, which can dampen feedback.

The feature that makes the TaylorMade Golf M6 D-Type Driver (460cc) unique from the standard M6 driver is the weight distribution. Most of its weight has been moved to the heel to make a draw bias (strong left side bias, if the stock shaft is used).

Compared to the M5 driver, it’s a little louder. The sound quality is not metallic and it’s low-pitched. It is a satisfying strike.

Note: Before you buy taylormade driver like this one, you should get fitted for the right shaft in order to perfectly match your swing type.

Pros:

  • Consistent great performance (if you’ve been properly fitted for the driver)
  • You can easily add a few more yards to your drives
  • TaylorMade’s driver is very accommodating
  • Hits more accurate drives

Cons:

  • Has limited adjustments
  • Weak club face

Taylormade Sim Max-D Driver, Ust Mamiya Helium 5 Shaft

One of TaylorMade’s newest drivers in 2020 was the SIM Max D driver. For the SIM MAX-D drive, TaylorMade focused on aerodynamics and geometry to build greater speed in the downswing. The Speed Injected Twist Face is also included to help you avoid mishits and hit the right track.

TaylorMade SIM MAX D Driver, UST Mamiya Helium 5 Shaft has the same forgiveness as SIM MAX. But it has “draw bias” and feels more different than SIM MAX.

Compared to the SIM and SIM MAX drivers, the SIM Max-D is noticeably bigger and longer. The SIM Max-D is more rectangular in shape with a taller face and a longer neck than other TaylorMade drivers.

High-handicappers as well as recreational golfers often have to deal with slices. The great news for slicers is the SIM Max-D can help reduce or remove your slice, thanks to its draw-biased head.

TaylorMade’s dial in trajectory with loft sleeves(tm), Technology allows you to adjust the driver and tailor it for your flight path and face angle preferences. The loft can be adjusted by +/- 2 degrees 2deg

Pros:

  • Increases your driver distance
  • This device is designed to exceed the legal maximum speed limit
  • Larger head promotes accuracy and reduces slice
  • Can help fix a weak fade

Cons:

  • Includes an inexact-fitting torque wrench
  • It makes a distinct “thud”,

Best for: mix of distance and forgiveness

This model is less forgiving than the SIM model and takes about half as long. This driver doesn’t have an adjustable speed and has a larger sweet spot.

The SIM Max D model is a little more forgiving than the SIM Max D, but the SIM Max has a slightly longer club face. We are talking feet here, not tens of yards. They are very different.

The pros: This SIM is $50 less than an adjustable SIM.

Cons: not adjustable; still heavily overpriced

The Taylormade Sim 2, now in its 2nd generation

Compared to the original SIM version, the TaylorMade SIM2 drivers’ exterior tracking was completely removed, creating even more discretionary weight to be used in the rear of the club.

Combining the through-slot speed pocket, SIM imertia generator and forged rings construction gives you additional clubhead speeds, while speed injected twist faces and split mass weighting feature help to forgive.

Forgiveness in golf is measured by something called MOI, or moment of inertia. The higher the MOI, the greater the forgiveness. This is why these MOI drivers are so important!

Another extremely important facet in the speed injected twist face technology is that it’s used to bring each club head up to the legal limit allowable under the current USGA rules. According to TaylorMade this provides a lethal combination of ball speed (Distance) across the face (Forgiveness).

The Test

The new SIM shape head is expected to increase my club head speed while still being very forgiving. I also want to find out which driver would be suited to me and you.

First, I went to Prestbury Golf Club and tried the different clubs in various situations. To find out my precise numbers, and to compare drivers using Foresight Technology, I went inside to The Range Manchester. TaylorMade was very kind to send me the right flex and length of the shafts in the SiM’s stock shafts: Mitsubishi Diamana S Limited60 and Project X HZRDUS Smoke Green70 so I could test these drivers.

Sim Max Driver Review

Taylormade Sim2 Max Driver

The progression here is straightforward. SIM2 MAX’s address profile is larger than SIM2. Loft-for-loft, it can be expected to launch higher and spin a bit more – about 300 rpm. It features a 24-gram tungsten weight at the back that boosts MOI about seven percent above SIM MAX.

Although no one driver will work for everyone, SIM2 MAX may be the best option if you are just looking at the probabilities.

As with the standard SIM, we’re not talking about ground-breaking MOI with the SIM MAX2 driver. It’s not low either, I would say. Again, TaylorMade’s MAX isn’t PING’s MAX. It’s not trying to be. Different philosophies yield entirely different designs which ultimately gives golfers more options.

For the sake of consistency, I’ll also mention the SIM2 MAX driver face is five percent larger than SIM.

The SIM2 MAX is available in nine, 10.5 and 12 degrees. Stock shaft offerings include the Fujikura Ventus* Blue 5 (made-for, no VeloCore) and Mitsubishi Kuro Kage Silver.

The stock grip is Golf Pride’s Z-Grip.

Additional shaft and grip options are available at no upcharge.

Taylormade Sim2 Driver-Forged Aluminium Ring

The most intriguing, and the flashiest, element of the TaylorMade SIM2 driver design is the forged aluminum ring that surrounds the crown and makes up a good portion of the back end of the driver.

Pins allow the anodized aluminum rings to be interlocked with each other. The crown and sole are bonded to the top and bottom respectively.

Although a simple, futuristic look can be attractive on the retail shelves, it is not without its value. The ring’s primary purpose is to reduce the weight of titanium used for that area.

TaylorMade says its aluminum is 40 percent lighter and is better suited to its particular application than carbon fiber. This aluminum is great for a wide range of applications that are mostly sheet. Carbon fiber doesn’t work well with more complicated geometries, such as TaylorMade’s ring. This is especially true considering the durability concerns we mentioned earlier.

Taylormade Sim Max Driver, Fujikura Ventus Blue 6 Shaft

You may be asking, “Which TaylorMade driver is best for me?” The TaylorMade SIM Max Driver and Fujikura Ventus Blue 6 Shaft might answer your question. This driver is specifically designed to offer maximum forgiveness and ball speed.

SIM MAX’s predecessor is the SIM. It doesn’t include the Sliding Weight Technology that is available only in SIM drivers.

TaylorMade instead equipped the SIM MAX’s most important features, Inertia generator and an asymmetrical sole, with TaylorMade. This combination of features results in three important benefits for the sole:

  • Maximum forgiveness
  • Aerodynamics: Reduced drag
  • Center of gravity projection (moved very low)

Speed Injected Twist Face has been calibrated and injected to reach the legally allowed ball speed limit set by R&A and USGA. The Twist Face helps with straight shots, and it increases backspin to keep the ball in the air longer.

Pros:

  • Adds significant distance to your drives
  • It’s easy to swing
  • Extremely forgiving
  • Increase the carrying capacity

Cons:

  • Might be too long for you
  • The shaft’s durability

Jpg

The crown and sole paneling of the SIM drivers is made out of carbon, meaning the designers can save a lot of weight in the head and was the key to unlocking a series of new geometric opportunities.

The ultra-lightweight chromium-carbon crown is new for 2020. It features a chalk-white top-line and frames the ball at the address to improve alignment.

Forgiveness

The SIM Max has many reasons that you will like it. However, the club’s forgiveness can make the game more enjoyable for higher handicappers and beginners. Mid handicappers will enjoy the short distance.

Construction

The SIM Max and SIM Max are made from a mix of steel, carbon and titanium. The sole and crown feature a detailed and super cool look carbon fiber pattern. The clubhead looks more prominent due to the chalk-white finishing. This gives you a lot of confidence standing over the ball. TaylorMade has done a great job. They look great, and may actually be my top pick for best looking drivers I’ve ever seen.

Taylormade Sim2 max D Price and Availability

Four hundred pounds won’t be cheap (in the US, you will pay about $530 while in Australia it’s $869), but you might save some money if you shop online. This means you may not get the right fit or shaft for your swing.

Sim Max Driver Review

A Brief History

For M5 and M6 drivers, the M5 and M6 cars featured the M6 central weight tracks that offered more forward inertia. This was to improve ball speed. The M series was known for its ball speed and range. The feel of these drivers is also sensational.

Sim drivers can be described as the M-series’ successor. They promise to be more forgiving than the M series was. The elimination of the central track allows for more weight to be concentrated in the back of the head, resulting in a better launch angle.

Sim Inertia Generator

TaylorMade SIM2 Drivers now have the SIM Inertia Generator.

Inertia, as mentioned earlier, refers to a club’s ability retain its shape by impact rather than torque and twist. This generator will increase the inertia of the club, allowing for higher clubhead speeds and enhancing forgiveness.

Sim Max Driver Review

Tech Talk

The SIM family of drivers feature a raised crown and sole to reduce drag and improve airflow throughout the swing. A raised sole and crown would normally mean that the CG is higher than normal, rendering it less responsive. TaylorMade has positioned their Inertia generator low at the back and a heavy steel weight to the rear. This moves the CG down, optimizing launch and improving MOI.

Face

Moving on to the ‘Face of Speed’, TaylorMade claim this is the fastest face they’ve ever managed to build on a driver. The Taylormade SIM2 Driver is now at the threshold of the maximum legal limit.

Not forgetting TaylorMade’s iconic ‘Twist Face’ technology, which helps off-center hits find more fairways thanks to the way the twist-face is designed.

Still not satisfied with the differences between the SIM2 and the SIM2 Max? Let’s now take a look into the new technology built within the head of the new TaylorMade SIM2 drivers.

Sim Max Driver Review

Playability/Trajectory

SIM Max had a mid-high flight which carried a long distance. The spins seem above average. Golfers with a low ball speed should easily get the ball through the air.

Sim Max Driver Review

sim max driver review

Performance

With the SIM MAX, the SIM driver could be tested at the identical loft. This enabled me to easily see differences between both models. It was the launch at a higher level that stood out. The SIM was low launching, but the SIM MAX launched in the low end of my normal window. Similar to the SIM, the SIM MAX has mid spin and the SIM MAX has low spin.

Forgiveness was an area where the SIM MAX lacked. On average, the SIM MAX gave me slightly better ball speed and better accuracy. Subjectively, the SIM MAX helped me get better results for my bad swings.

Progressive Face Heights, a feature new to SIM drivers is one. TaylorMade examined the effects of impact points and handicaps to design the drivers. SIM driver is meant to be the most efficient, and the smallest. SIM Max D features a face that is 8 percent larger than the SIM Max, and 18% more. Putting these drivers next to each other, the difference is obvious, and players should consider their visual preference when deciding between these clubs.

The SIM MAX’s upgrade to the M6 last year is not substantial. (M6 driver review here). While both drivers are excellent, they’re very forgiving and don’t have a lot of bells-and-whistles. If you want to play the M6 on your smartphone, the SIM is not necessary.

Taylormade Sim Driver Verdict

Although I thought the SIM model would win this review, I was wrong. Dare I say that it delivered exactly what it claimed. The spin sometimes dropped too much for my lower swing speed.

The SIM Max was the only thing that really amazed me. I never caught one. My distance didn’t drop because I did not get a high spinning shot (more than 3000rpm).

I never expected the middle driver of this range to perform so well without having to alter settings to lower spin. Without affecting spin, the Inertia Generator was certainly a benefit.

Due to the position of the Inertia Generator and its shape, swing speeds were not increased. The 20-degree angle of inertia generator is still elusive to me. While it can be demonstrated in TaylorMade labs or by DJs swinging at the club “in slot”, I am not convinced that we will all enjoy the benefits.

Why I Chose This Club

This club was on sale at the right time and Taylormade is a great brand. I bought it. They already have wedges that I own and I love them. I thought the driver might be as happy.

Though I did consider purchasing the Callaway Mavrik phone, the SIM Max was the best option due to the low price and many good online reviews. The Mavrik was not as far as I expected, which I didn’t like as I was a teenager. I wanted something to satisfy my hunger for long distance.

Verdict

While the SIM’s name may not sound quite as powerful and memorable as its predecessor, M-Series, we have to admit that it has a beautiful appearance.

The design of the new SIM family is simply phenomenal and as we said in the video review, it seems to grow on you more and more while you’re using it.

This is by far the most popular driver in address. In contrast to the carbon crown, it looks stunning with its chalky white topline. This is an amazing example of how a small change can really make a difference.

TaylorMade has a reputation for delivering exceptional performance when it is about drivers.

The Inertia Generator, which was slightly inclined, did appear to slightly increase my club speed. SIM Max as well as SIM Max also produced some very promising numbers.

In the SIM driver you have a low spinning driver that produced a penetrating ball flight, while the SIM Max gave me a little more spin and a higher ball flight.

The SIM Max was definitely more forgiving, but it was my favourite driver out of the two as it still gave me the distance I was out of a big stick.

sim max driver review

Cons:

No dramatic improvements over previous models

There is not a lot of adjustment

These drivers, known as SIM or SIM Max, will be available in 2020. The speed injected twist face technology remains, as does the MOI sole weight – only it’s been implemented slightly differently this time. The focus of this review is the SIM Max, though the SIM is of course very similar, only with a smaller face and more adjustability.

Naturally, the first thing we noticed about this driver was its great looks. Since its predecessor, the bottom of this driver has been a little more polished. The dark metallic colors combine to create a striking, visually pleasing design.

TaylorMade claims that the driver offers more performance and has optimized its sole weight for a higher MOI. The swing will therefore be lighter and faster. Also, the launch conditions for this model are slightly different to previous ones.

TaylorMade was very happy with how the M driver’s faces worked, so there have not been any changes to their speed-injected face twist technology. It rockets from the head, as we have come to expect. The special design was created to aid you when the ball hits parts of your face that cause problems. The ball also sounds amazing.

There’s no denying that TaylorMade has been able to increase ball speeds over the years, but it’s likely that they are now facing the problem of diminishing returns. While this driver is great, the weight of the sole seems to be making a difference. But, for most players, performance gains may seem insignificant.

Final Thoughts

TaylorMade is a pioneer in golf club technology. SIM Max has a remarkable driver with its light MOI and proven speed injecting face. If you are a professional player and believe that you would be more successful with this club, then it is for your benefit.

You can join the fun even if you are a higher handicapper. The clubface may be optimized for speed, but it’s also been built to be as forgiving as possible, and the carefully placed CG will help you to get the right amount of loft.

If you currently play with the TaylorMade M5 or M6, don’t expect a huge transformation to occur when you pick up the SIM Max – however, you can rest assured that this driver is a quality piece of kit.

Taylormade Sim Max Driver Review

TaylorMade SIM MAX, a forgiveness driver with an eight-percent larger face and twenty grams in weight back, is the TaylorMade SIM MAX.

It was designed to give golfers more forgiveness. The additional 20-gram weight is adjusted at the extreme rear of the club using the inertia generator.

The extra weight track located behind the club improves the moment-of-inertia (M.O.I.). An increased M.O.I. This increases forgiveness and boosts launch.

Before we get into detail and discuss the various attributes of TaylorMade SIM MAX, let’s take a look at its past, along with a brief history of TaylorMade SIM drivers.

History The TaylorMade research team first discovered the correlation between handicaps & the location of ball impacts on the skin. These data led to them creating a SIM-driver family for handicapped people to meet their needs.

SIM MAX is the SIM driver. SIM MAX D, SIM MAX, SIM MAX are all part of the SIM driver’s SIM driver family. The main difference between the three SIM-driver family members is the size of their face.

SIM is smaller in size which makes it ideal for handicap players. On the other hand, the SIM MAX drivers and SIM MAX D are eight percent (08%) and eighteen percent (18%), respectively, catering to the golfer’s needs at a different level of handicap.

Are The Sim Max Drivers Worth it?

Conclusion. TaylorMade SIM MAX has the highest game improvement potential a mid-high handicapper could currently access. It delivers the same distance or even more than the SIM for many golfers. It’s also more forgiving, comparable with the M6 of the previous season.Aug 10, 2020

Is The Taylormade Sim Max Driver Forgiving?

TaylorMade SIM Driver (Shape and Motion) is one the three 2020 TaylorMade driving models. It focuses upon controlling spin, dialling shot bias and forgiveness. Max D SIM drivers focus on their draw-bias driver.

Is Sim Max Driver Better Than M6?

The M6 is a fantastic choice for anyone who wants a driver with great feedback and a satisfying thud when taking dead-center shots. The Sim series may be more flexible and can take a bit longer to drive, but the M6 feels slightly better. It also has a draw bias option for those who prefer it.

Which Sim Do You Think Is Most Forgiving? Sim Max Or Sim Sim?

SIM Max is a less demanding club with a lower launch and higher ball flight. SIM driver targets low handicappers.
